AfDB President Adesina bags Awolowo Prize for Leadership Award

The President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, was awarded the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership Award at a ceremony held at the Lagos Continental Hotel. The event was attended by former heads of state, state governors, royal fathers, and other distinguished Nigerians. Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon praised Adesina as a brilliant and hardworking man who represents the best of Nigeria. Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, also commended the choice of Adesina as the fourth recipient of the prestigious award, which was established in honor of late Awolowo. Past winners of the award include Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, and lawyer Aare Afe Babalola. The event was graced by former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, along with the representation of President Bola Tinubu by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Women Affairs Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized that the government will not tolerate child abuse, child labor, maltreatment, assault, and other forms of violence against children, and will severely punish perpetrators. The government plans to implement various strategies to address these issues, including the enforcement of laws such as the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act. The police have also pledged to thoroughly investigate and prosecute related cases, emphasizing their zero tolerance for domestic violence and abuse of minors and vulnerable individuals. Additionally, it was noted that all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory have domesticated the Child Rights Act, and 35 states and the FCT have domesticated the VAPP Act to strengthen systems for the prevention and response to violence against children.

Bauchi civil servants get N680m leave grants

The Bauchi state government has disbursed a total of N680 million in outstanding leave grants and allowances to civil servants. Vitol and Trafigura have been involved in providing support, with Vitol prepaying for some product cargoes and Trafigura swapping crude oil for future fuel cargoes. Both Vitol and Trafigura declined to comment.

767 manufacturers shut down in 2023 – MAN

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has reported that 767 manufacturers have shut down operations and 335 have become distressed in 2023 due to economic challenges such as exchange rate volatility, rising inflation, and other factors. MAN condemned the recently introduced Expatriate Employment Levy (EEL) by the Federal Government, stating that it contradicts President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and the kernel of his Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform initiative. The association expressed concern that the EEL would have negative consequences on the manufacturing sector and the economy at large, adding unwarranted and unprecedented costs to doing business in Nigeria. MAN also highlighted a decline in capacity utilization, rising interest rates, scarcity of forex for importing raw materials and machinery, and a drop in real growth.MAN voiced worry that the EEL contradicts international trade agreements and obligations, including the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement. The association cautioned that the levy could trigger retaliatory measures against Nigerians working across Africa and other nations, as well as potentially exert pressure on the national currency. MAN urged the president to discontinue the implementation of the EEL.The Expatriate Employment Levy, introduced by the Federal Government, aims to address wage gaps between expatriates and the Nigerian labor force while encouraging skills transfer and the employment of qualified Nigerians in foreign-owned companies. The levy represents a significant shift from previous fees paid by foreign nationals. However, the policy has been met with strong criticism from Nigeria's Organized Private Sector, with concerns that it may negatively affect Foreign Direct Investments in the country.The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed concern that the policy might lead to the relocation of foreign companies to neighboring countries and trigger retaliatory actions against Nigerian workers in other countries, affecting diaspora remittances. The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise also criticized the policy, highlighting potential implications for diaspora Nigerians and the continental economic integration vision.

The Coastal roads will stretch 700 kilometers from Lagos to Calabar in Cross River State, while the Trans-Saharan highway will link Ogoja in Cross River to Cameroon. The Federal Executive Council has approved 1.067 trillion naira for the first phase of the coastal highway, covering 47.47 kilometers of a dual-carriageway with five lanes on each side and a train track in the middle.
