UNGA78: Tinubu, Adeboye lead African First Ladies in peace moves

The First Ladies High Level Forum was held at the ongoing 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York to celebrate the 2023 UN Day of Peace. Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, spoke on the theme “Gender actions for peace: Ambition for women leaders as key players on the global peace”, emphasizing that peace was not just the absence of war but presence of justice, equity and harmony, and called for every individual, regardless of their gender, to be able to thrive in an environment free from violence and discrimination. Pastor Folu Adeboye urged the First Ladies not to let their husbands cause trouble for their respective countries or go to war, while CISLAC presented the SDG 16 Nigeria 2022 Shadow Report 2023 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which showed areas Nigeria needed improvement on.

Nigeria too important to be ignored, Tinubu tells world leaders

Nigeria's former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, has said that the world risks failure if the idealistic narratives advocated by various heads of state and governments at the United Nations General Assembly are not translated into action. Tinubu, now a national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, told the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, that Nigeria is a giant nation with its weight so heavy in the global scheme that ignoring the country would spell dire consequences for the rest of the world. Tinubu added that the United Nations must transform from being one of the world’s foremost talk shops to discuss global issues into the world’s foremost action coordination centre. He also called for concerted, urgent action and said that his presidency would work to provide the development that Nigeria and Africa so urgently demands.

‘Africa will no longer watch foreigners plunder its resources’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Africa has sought the United Nations’ help in defeating “resource thieves” who illegally exploit the country's mineral resources. Tinubu called for African countries to be “aggressive in the fight” against smugglers taking natural resources from the continent’s shores, and questioned the motives of those attempting to take resources illegally. The President argued that the advocacy of human rights is used by wealthy countries to prevent less developed economies from taking decisive action against actors who smuggle resources from the continent. Tinubu demanded that the UN transform itself from one of the global discussion centre into the “world’s foremost action coordination centre”.

Our govt will boost nation’s fortune, says Shettima

In a meeting with some of his former classmates and National Youth Service Corps members, Vice President Kashim Shettima assured them that the Bola Tinubu administration would develop and grow the country's fortune. He stated that their positions in government were not due to their intellectual or physical abilities but because of the grace of God. Shettima emphasised the need to improve the quality of governance and mitigate the looming demographic disaster. The alumni urged the government to promote enhanced agricultural production and value addition. Shettima's set of NYSC members in Calabar expressed confidence that the nation would overcome its current challenges and come out better.

Tinubu’s investment policy will end smuggling, says Customs CG Adeniyi

The Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s investment policy will end smuggling of contraband into the country. Adeniyi made the comment at the passing out parade of 956 General Duty Junior Officers who completed their Basic Course 1/2023 training at the Customs Training College in Goron Dutse, Kano. Adeniyi praised Tinubu’s policies for making businesses thrive, attracting investors and rebuilding the economy. Adeniyi also said that, out of over 500,000 applicants received for admission into the Customs training school, only 956 were admitted. Adeniyi urged the recruits to see their admission as a call to duty and diligent service to the Customs and the nation. Additionally, Adeniyi stated that the era of the Customs service facing a deficit in the handling of weapons and ammunition is over. He said that the training the recruits received had equipped them with the mental presence and capacity to handle weapons in a responsible way and had prepared them to deal with challenges and obstacles.

NASS will reform Nigeria’s tax system, says Deputy Speaker Kalu

The deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has said that the Nigerian parliament will work with the executive arm of government to reform the nation's tax law and eliminate multiple taxation. Speaking at a World Bank Fiscal Governance and Institutions Project Focus Group Discussion in capital city Abuja, Kalu said that the government aimed to carry out fiscal reforms that directly address the most pressing issues in the tax system and overall fiscal policy. The National Assembly will take advantage of constitutional amendments to introduce flexibility to tax policy reforms, he added. Kalu also stressed the necessity of modernising revenue collection through automation to boost efficiency and reduce opportunities for corruption and revenue leakage.

Prioritise patients’ safety, HEFAMAA tells health workers

The Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency in Lagos State has urged health workers to prioritize patient safety and minimize risk when providing care. This call was made in commemoration of World Patient Safety Day, which is celebrated annually on September 17. The theme for this year's event was "Engaging patients for patient safety." The Executive Secretary of the agency highlighted the alarming number of deaths resulting from unsafe care worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries like Nigeria. The wife of the Lagos State governor emphasized that patient safety was a shared responsibility of health care workers and the patient's family. The Chairman of HEFAMAA emphasized that patients should be engaged throughout the entirety of the healthcare journey.

The Katsina State Government has approved the allocation of N761m for the construction of a new dialysis center in Katsina, alongside plans to upgrade Faskari Comprehensive Health Centre to a general hospital. NCAA inaugurates joint audit committee on aviation fuel activities

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has set up a joint audit committee on all aviation fuel activities in the country. The committee's mandate is to identify all root causes, proffer solutions and recommendations that would improve the level of safety in the aviation industry in Nigeria. The committee members will tour the country to ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements in fueling facilities and equipment from the initial source of the fuel to the aircraft. The collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has led to the identification of all non-licensed fuelers and those with expired licenses in Nigeria, and all their activities have been suspended in Nigerian airports. The committee is made up of members from various agencies and associations in Nigeria.

Adamawa begins vaccination against cervical cancer Monday

The government of Adamawa State in Nigeria will begin vaccinating young girls between 9 and 14 years against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in an effort to reduce the mortality rate from cervical cancer in women. The vaccines will be given across all 21 local council areas of the state over five days, starting on Monday. The state Health Care Agency Chairman stated that the HPV vaccination is the most effective prevention against cervical cancer and is safe, effective, and free. Girls older than 15 must be screened before getting the vaccine. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women, and timely actions can prevent it. Parents of girls in the age bracket are urged to allow their children to get vaccinated, and vaccinators will go from house-to-house to ensure coverage.

By supporting the ten principles of the UNGC on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, NNPCL aims to move away from a fossil fuel-driven energy system. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has encouraged investors not to be put off by negative narratives about his country and to "invest in Nigeria", where a unique mix of opportunities made it impossible to replicate elsewhere. Speaking at the Nigeria-US Executive Business Roundtable after becoming the first African leader to ring the closing bell at the Nasdaq, Tinubu said he had intentionally brought successful Nigerian industrialists and public officials to share their experiences and operational plans, as well as boosting confidence in the country’s currently reforming fiscal, policy and regulatory environment.

Tinubu mandates training of talents in digital skills

President Bola Tinubu has mandated the training of millions of citizens, especially youths, in digital skills over the next 2-3 years, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Tijani emphasised the importance of using digital technology to address issues such as agriculture and food security, and increase productivity. He added that the government is pulling together tech industry stakeholders and will collaborate with foundations and development agencies to achieve its targets. YouTube, Google, and other large firms will be invited to train youths and the government hopes to raise over $4bn for start-ups and accelerate the digitalisation of government services.

Medical engineering don wins 2023 NLNG science prize

Hippolite Amadi, a professor of Medical Engineering and Technology, has won the 2023 Nigeria $100,000 Prize for Science for his work on respiratory technologies that has aided in saving the lives of newborn babies in Nigeria. Amadi was chosen as the winner from 100 entries and was recognized for his innovative work in the field of newborn and child health. His work, titled “Innovation for Enhancement of Healthcare Therapy,” showcased three technological innovations aimed at making oxygen delivery cheap and easy. The devices include the non-invasive Neonatal Ventilator, the Oxygen Delivery Blender System, and the Oxygen Splitter System, all of which are solar powered and have been tried by practitioners in various hospitals across Nigeria. The devices have tremendously improved access and lowered the cost of neonatal care in Nigeria and similar countries.

72 beneficiaries of BEA scholarships off to Hungary

Seventy-two Nigerian students who are beneficiaries of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarships have been granted undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships by Hungary and are scheduled to leave Nigeria next week for the European country. The scholarship programme is part of access to higher education promotion plan organised by the government to encourage brilliant Nigerian students who lack the funds to further their education abroad. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo, advised recipients of the scholarship to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and parents to their host country. Nigeria also stated that it had offered scholarships to China and Romania in the past and hoped to consider such gesture for Hungary and other countries in the future.

UNIOSUN to graduate 4,210 students

Osun State University in Nigeria will award degrees to 4,210 students during combined 12th and 13th convocation ceremonies. Of those, 89 will graduate with first class honours, while 1,326 obtain second class (upper division) degrees. While addressing journalists, Vice Chancellor Prof. Clement Adebooye said the university will continue its efforts to provide the best education and aims to be among the top 10 universities in Nigeria and the top 25 in Africa by 2026. The university's teaching hospital, donated by Chancellor Dr. Folorunso Alakija, is currently at a completion level of 97%.
