Clockwise from top left: Harvard Undergraduate Bhangra, The First-Year Musical "Starville", Kate Vandermel ’25 and Henry Wu ’25, and a birthday sign at the afterparty Kate Vandermel ’25 and Henry Wu ’25 performed an operatic rendition of Harvard’s mission statement—surely the first recitation of its kind. Vandermel donned a gilded shawl, smiling while professing “the transformative power of a liberal arts and sciences education.” Wu’s piano grew more intense and, during the reprise, Vandermel approached the edge of the stage like a pop star.

Set to Dominick Argento’s vibrant score, Postcard from Morocco follows a group of strangers waiting at a train station at a time in which they are in search of meaning. While some grapple with uncertainty and the need to hide parts of their identity, others embrace intimate, romantic moments, such as a tender exchange in German, where the audience is invited to feel rather than fully understand. The opera moves beyond a singular focus on any one emotion, offering glimpses into the multifaceted nature of human experience. For some characters, this is a time in which they are hesitant to reveal core facets of their identity, uncertain of how those around them might react. They long to hide, yet desire to be seen. This paradox makes them sharply distinct, with each of the characters emotionally sophisticated and multidimensional. They confront reality in various ways – through paranoia, fantasy, and satire. Each character reflects the myriad ways people cope with uncertainty and seek the connection of others. The eclectic, genre-defying score serves as an emotional roadmap that guides the audience through these internal landscapes. It invites listeners to confront their feelings head-on.

‘It’s Honestly Not That Serious’: Peer Advisors Help Freshmen Navigate Blocking Decisions

Harvard freshmen are gearing up for the housing lottery, selecting up to seven peers to “block” with before being assigned to one of 12 upperclassmen Houses. While some worry about friendship dynamics and the possibility of being placed in the distant Radcliffe Quad, Peer Advising Fellows (PAFs) emphasize that blocking doesn’t determine roommates and doesn’t limit friendships. Despite reassurances, many students still feel anxious about their choices. However, most ultimately find that Housing Day—when assignments are revealed—brings excitement and a sense of community.

On Lamont’s 75th Anniversary, Librarians Reflect on ‘Microcosm’ of Campus History

By Katie B. Tian and Samantha D. Wu

Harvard’s Lamont Library, which turned 75 last month, has been a key undergraduate study space since its 1949 opening. Initially designed for student accessibility, it evolved into a 24/7 hub, earning a loyal following of “Lamonsters.” Over the decades, it has adapted to major changes, from welcoming women in 1967 to hosting campus protests. Recent concerns over centralization have raised questions about its undergraduate focus, but planned renovations aim to enhance its facilities while preserving its role as a vital space for student learning and campus life.

作者:  Katie B. Tian  、  Samantha D. Wu

Making Harvard Great Again

In recent years, Harvard's conservative students have gained momentum, culminating in the Harvard Conservative and Republican Student Conference held on February 8, 2025. The event featured prominent right-wing figures, including Steve Bannon and Amy L. Wax, and proceeded without protests, reflecting a shift in campus dynamics. This development highlights the growing presence and influence of conservative voices at an institution traditionally viewed as a liberal stronghold.

Chance Encounters: Self-Checkout, Bill Gates, and the Loss of Shared Humanity

This article reflects on how technological advancements, such as self-checkout and AI-driven services, reduce human interaction. The author recalls childhood memories of Target, where personal exchanges with cashiers created a sense of community. Despite Bill Gates' optimistic view of technological progress, the piece argues that automation’s rise diminishes spontaneous, meaningful interactions, which are vital to human connection. The article urges us to make deliberate choices to reconnect in an increasingly digitized world.

By Victoria Chen In and of itself, the loss of cashiers seems insignificant. Self-driving cars and pre-order systems at first feel innocuous, or even beneficial. But they add to a larger trend of turning towards our screens and away from one another.

Columns: Should Harvard Admit More Rich Kids? Actually, Yes

The article argues that Harvard’s practice of admitting children of wealthy donors, while controversial, is justified. The donations these families make, which often run into the millions, fund essential initiatives such as research and financial aid. While donor preferences do increase funds for the University, they are not the primary driver of socioeconomic inequality in admissions. The author suggests that transparency about these preferences and focusing on increasing financial aid would better address issues of access and diversity in higher education.

Columns: Studying for My Midterm in Neo-Marxist Class Warfare Propaganda

The author humorously critiques their intense experience studying for a midterm in a satirical "Neo-Marxist Class Warfare Propaganda" course. They exaggerate the course’s challenges, such as mastering Russian phrases and addressing complex societal issues, while sarcastically mocking academia's left-leaning ideologies. The piece touches on themes of privilege, meritocracy, and higher education, reflecting on both the absurdities of elite educational culture and the clash with political views. The article blends satire with commentary on academia's political dynamics.

Columns: A Conservative Case Against the Endowment Tax

The author criticizes the proposed tax on college endowments, particularly Harvard’s, by Republican Congressman Mike Lawler. They argue that it contradicts conservative, small-government principles, as it could lead to higher tuition and reduced financial aid, harming low-income students. The piece highlights how the endowment tax may be more about cultural politics than effective economic policy, undermining fiscal responsibility and economic growth. The author warns that this policy risks causing economic harm while contradicting the core tenets of conservatism.

Editorials: Trump Can’t Order Away Ideas

The editorial criticizes the Trump administration’s letter to Harvard and other universities, urging them to stop using race in various campus decisions. It argues that while the administration may try to influence higher education through financial pressure, it cannot stifle progressive ideas. The editorial emphasizes that the issue is more about political messaging than actual policy, and calls for Harvard to resist overreacting and maintain its inclusive practices. The editorial concludes that the administration's culture war tactics will ultimately fail.

Flyby Tries: Making Harvard Square College-Kid Friendly

The article suggests that Harvard Square needs more student-friendly options, such as affordable convenience stores, a versatile department store, and additional fast food options. It also proposes more clothing stores, particularly affordable ones, to cater to student budgets. The authors argue these changes would make the area more appealing to Harvard students rather than focusing on tourists. With stores like Anthropologie closing, the hope is for a shift that prioritizes student needs.

Seeding doubt: The truth about cooking oils

The article clarifies misconceptions about seed oils like canola and soybean oil, arguing they aren't inherently unhealthy. While critics cite concerns over omega-6 fatty acids, the article explains there's no scientific evidence linking them to inflammation. Additionally, concerns over hexane and heated oils are largely overstated. Moderation in oil use and avoiding excessive fast food are key to a heart-healthy diet. Seed oils, when used properly, can be part of a balanced diet.

Don't believe the naysayers — canola, soybean, and other seed oils can be a good source of heart-healthy fat if you use them wisely.

The bottom line on fake meat and health

Plant-based meats, though processed, generally offer better nutritional profiles than red meat, being lower in saturated fat, providing fiber, and similar in protein content. However, they tend to be higher in sodium. Studies show mixed results on their health benefits, but they appear to be at least as healthy as red meat. These products can serve as a steppingstone to a more plant-based diet.

These findings emphasize the potential health benefits of regular yogurt consumption.

Fermented foods, like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi, naturally contain probiotics that promote gut health. While probiotic supplements can be useful for specific ailments, they are not recommended for daily use. The experts emphasize adding fermented foods to your diet to improve gut microbiome diversity and overall well-being.
