NC Attorney General Launches Campaign for Governor with Full Support from Roy Cooper

On the afternoon of June 20, 2024, Stuart and Ella Frantz hosted a fundraising event at their house in Raleigh, North Carolina, for their good friend, State Attorney General Josh Stein, who is running for Governor of North Carolina in 2025. The current Governor of North Carolina-Roy Cooper, made a special appearance to support and endorse Stein, with 200 people attending the event. Representatives of the Chinese community in North Carolina, including John Wei, Li Meng, Lisa Huang, Florence Ko,Catherine Song, Jiang Sundong, and Wang Huimin, were invited to attend.

The event began with speeches from the hosts, Stuart and Ella Frantz, who introduced Attorney General Josh Stein as a capable and hardworking individual, beloved by the people of North Carolina. They encouraged everyone present to support him, help promote his campaign, and donate to his cause, expressing confidence that he will become the next Governor of North Carolina. The Frantz couple also praised Governor Roy Cooper’s accomplishments over the past eight years and expressed hope that he would remain involved even after leaving office.

Following this, two singers performed a guitar rendition of the country song "Carolina In My Mind." (The lyrics are attached at the end of this report)

Governor Roy Cooper, in his speech, emphasized the importance of placing outstanding individuals in significant positions. He shared his long-standing relationship with Josh Stein, spanning over 20 years, and highlighted Stein’s resilience and decisiveness, particularly during his tenure as Attorney General. Cooper expressed his belief that Stein’s determination and intelligence make him well-suited for the role of Governor. He voiced his excitement about Stein’s candidacy and pledged his full support in the coming months.

Attorney General Josh Stein, in his speech, first thanked Governor Roy Cooper for his contributions to North Carolina over the past seven and a half years. Stein expressed his honor in being Cooper’s subordinate, colleague, and friend. He also thanked all the friends present at the fundraising event.

Josh Stein stated that North Carolina is our shared home, known not only for its beautiful natural scenery but also for having some of the best educational institutions and teachers in the world, as well as being home to both small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. He expressed his pride in the state and his love for his hometown. Stein emphasized his belief in North Carolina’s promise: with hard work, success is achievable regardless of one’s background. He stressed the importance of providing quality education for our children, ensuring they have a brighter future, whether through higher education or entrepreneurship.

Stein outlined his plans to support education by increasing teachers’ salaries, developing the economy to provide job opportunities across the state, and ensure good healthcare for all North Carolinians, preventing financial ruin due to medical expenses. He also advocated for protecting women’s reproductive freedom. Stein concluded by emphasizing the need to prioritize people and fight for the residents of North Carolina, envisioning a stronger economy, safer communities, better schools, and greater protection of freedoms.

Meng Li, President of the Chinese American Economic & Cultural Association(CAECA）noted the growing Chinese population and community organizations in North Carolina, along with an increasing awareness of political participation. He highlighted the frequent participation of state and local officials in Chinese community events as a testament to their support. Li encouraged Chinese voters to exercise their right to vote, from presidential to school board elections, and expressed his hope for respectful discourse during the election process, despite differing opinions and party affiliations.

John Wei, Founding Chairman of the CAECA, having lived in North Carolina for over 40 years, has gotten along very well with both Democratic and Republican administrations, regardless of who the governor has been.He praised Governor Roy Cooper for his consistent support of the Chinese community over the past eight years and expressed hope that Josh Stein, if elected, would continue to support North Carolinian Chinese residents. John Wei urged everyone to vote on November 5, regardless of party affiliation, to exercise their democratic rights.
