All living cells require a continuous supply of oxygen to maintain structure and function. Even brief episodes that compromise oxygen supply can lead to significant disability and death. A potential new treatment, developed by John Kheir, HMS associate professor of pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and Yifeng Peng, HMS assistant professor of pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, allows the direct injection of oxygen gas into the bloodstream to rescue patients in these dire situations. The oxygen is encapsulated in tiny particles made specifically for this purpose. The particle shells are manufactured as solid. When injected, the pH of the blood triggers the shells to phase change into fluid, transferring their oxygen cargo to the starved blood and tissues. In animal models, injection of small amounts of this experimental drug reversed cardiac arrest, improved survival, and dramatically improved outcomes in survivors. The project is one of three recipients of the 2024 Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards, an annual awards program that aims to progress promising discovery science at HMS toward the creation of new medicines that could be life-changing for patients. For this project, the funding will support development of manufacturing techniques to prepare for clinical trials, which will determine whether the treatment is safe and effective for patients.

Harvard Announces Hiring Freeze

Harvard has implemented a hiring freeze in response to financial uncertainty caused by shifting federal policies under the Trump administration. The NIH funding cuts pose a major risk, potentially reducing Harvard’s research funding by over $100 million annually. Additionally, the White House’s $400 million cut to Columbia University over campus antisemitism concerns has raised fears that Harvard could face similar action. Harvard leadership, including President Alan Garber and FAS Dean Hopi Hoekstra, has warned of austerity measures, instructing departments to cut discretionary spending and delay capital projects. The hiring pause follows similar actions at MIT, Stanford, and Yale.

Faculty Searches in Limbo As Freeze Interrupts Hiring Processes Across Harvard

By William C. Mao and Veronica H. Paulus

Harvard's recent hiring freeze, attributed to financial uncertainties under President Trump, has disrupted faculty searches across the university, leaving departments scrambling to fill vacancies. The sudden announcement has put many hiring processes on hold, affecting multiple disciplines, including Philosophy, Classics, Jewish Studies, and Biostatistics. Faculty fear a prolonged freeze could lead to fewer small courses, increased workload for existing professors, and missed opportunities to hire top talent. While some understand the financial caution, others argue that Harvard must take a stronger stance against Trump’s attacks on higher education funding, especially after Columbia’s $400 million funding cut.

作者:  William C. Mao  、  Veronica H. Paulus

Harvard has imposed a University-wide hiring freeze, citing financial uncertainty under the Trump administration and potential federal funding cuts. Announced by President Alan Garber, the freeze aims to preserve financial flexibility amid ongoing legal battles over Trump's executive orders limiting research funding and overhead costs. Harvard joins Stanford, MIT, and Penn in similar cost-cutting measures. The freeze, which may impact construction projects and faculty hiring, follows the Trump administration's $400 million funding cut to Columbia University and increased federal scrutiny of Harvard. Experts warn that this politically driven financial crisis could have long-term consequences for higher education.

Columns: All Concentrations Are Created Equal

This column argues that all Harvard concentrations should be valued equally, countering the common perception that STEM fields are superior in rigor and prestige. While STEM courses demand extensive time and effort, humanities and social sciences also offer intellectual depth and societal impact, as seen in the contributions of W.E.B. Du Bois, T.S. Eliot, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The author criticizes Harvard’s prestige-driven culture, which pressures students to choose majors based on reputation rather than passion. Ultimately, the piece encourages students to pursue what excites them, rather than conforming to external expectations.

Life-changing brain tech, but with a chilling caveat

A new discussion paper from Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights highlights ethical concerns surrounding brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) like Neuralink, which show promise in aiding people with disabilities but also pose risks of mind control and psychological manipulation. Research fellow Lukas Meier draws parallels to Cold War-era experiments like the CIA’s MKUltra, where unethical attempts at altering behavior caused lifelong harm to subjects. Meier warns that BCIs could eventually decode thoughts and influence behavior, raising serious concerns about consent and mental privacy. Despite these risks, he supports continued development of BCI technology in the U.S. to prevent misuse by global adversaries.
