Harvard Removes Transgender Inclusion Policy From Athletics Site After Trump Signs Executive Order - The site still includes language prohibiting exclusion based on sexual orientation or gender identity
Harvard Athletics removed its Transgender Inclusion Policy from its website after President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports at school and collegiate levels. The order redefines Title IX to restrict participation based on sex assigned at birth and threatens federal funding for schools that allow transgender women in women’s sports. Harvard still prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, but its policies defer to NCAA regulations, which may change under federal pressure. The move follows a lawsuit involving transgender swimmer Lia Thomas and ongoing federal actions limiting trans rights.

Math 55 to Hold In-Person Midterm in Shift from Past Semesters
Harvard’s Math 55B, known as one of the most challenging undergraduate math courses, will shift to an in-person midterm this semester after years of take-home exams. Instructor Denis Auroux said the change aims to assess basic skills and help students gauge their progress before the drop deadline. Some students welcome the shift, expecting it to reduce their workload. Math Department leaders suggest all undergraduate math courses include in-person assessments. Course assistants believe the change will enhance learning, despite the inevitable stress.
Some undergraduates in the course said they were unfazed by the change to an in-person exam, saying they expect the new model to take less time and decrease their workload — especially considering the required problem set assigned in the same week. “I don’t think most people care that deeply, to be honest,” Ryan M.J. Shin ’28 said. Last semester in Math 55A, students were assigned a problem set alongside the take-home midterm, which Albert Z. Tang ’28 said “was just very hard.”

Op Eds: If Harvard Bends to Trump, It’s Already Lost
This op-ed argues that Harvard should resist “anticipatory obedience” to Trump-era policies that threaten academic freedom. The authors criticize Harvard’s recent adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism and hiring of a Trump-linked lobbying firm, seeing these moves as preemptive concessions. They warn that broad policies could suppress free speech, citing past campus debates and faculty concerns. Instead, they advocate for a principled stance, recalling Harvard’s past defiance of Trump’s visa policies, and urge the university to protect its values rather than yield to political pressure.

Columns: I’ll Say It: Harvard Square Doesn’t Suck
This column argues that Harvard Square’s increasing commercialization isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While nostalgic alumni lament the loss of unique, historic businesses, the rise of chain restaurants and coffee shops caters to modern students’ needs for convenience, affordability, and accessibility. The author acknowledges concerns about excessive corporate presence but emphasizes that many beloved local staples, like Pinocchio’s and the Harvard Book Store, still thrive. Ultimately, the piece suggests that change is inevitable, and as long as businesses serve the community’s practical needs, Harvard Square remains a functional and vibrant space.
