What prompts genetic adaptation? Ask a finch.
A new pangenomic study led by Bohao Fang offers fresh insights into how genetic adaptations occur in response to disease. By analyzing the DNA of house finches, Fang discovered a large DNA inversion that may have helped these birds resist certain diseases, such as conjunctivitis. The study utilized advanced sequencing techniques and a broader genomic approach, which revealed structural variations previously overlooked. This research could provide valuable clues on how evolution enables species, including humans, to respond to infectious diseases. The findings also suggest that a pangenomic approach may be key to understanding genetic responses in wild populations.

‘Just Take My Information’: Harvard Students Risk Leaks for Love on Datamatch
By Hiral M. Chavre and Darcy G Lin
Harvard's annual Datamatch survey is reopening, but last year's data leak still lingers in students' minds. In 2024, a student exposed security flaws by scraping and leaking user information, raising concerns about data privacy. While Datamatch has since removed its searchable user function and claims to have strengthened security, some vulnerabilities may persist. Despite this, many students remain unfazed, prioritizing the fun of matchmaking over privacy concerns. While some users plan to exercise caution, others are indifferent, with one student remarking, “Just take my information. It’s okay.”

As Trump Orders ICE Raids Nationwide, Harvard Stays Quiet
As the Trump administration ramps up nationwide deportations, Harvard maintains its policy of directing federal officers to the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) or the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) if they seek access to non-public spaces. However, the university has not issued public statements on immigration enforcement, unlike past actions challenging Trump-era policies. Faculty have been privately reminded of the protocol, but concerns remain about its scope and effectiveness, particularly amid Trump’s executive order targeting pro-Palestine international students. Harvard says it continues to monitor policy changes and support affected students.

Staring Back at the Panopticon: Resisting Tech Cronyism Under Trump 2.0
Patrick K. Lin’s commentary critiques the Trump administration’s deregulatory stance on technology, particularly AI and surveillance. Lin highlights executive actions that favor tech cronyism, including AI deregulation and the militarization of surveillance tools. He warns that these policies, alongside increased reliance on AI, exacerbate privacy violations, algorithmic bias, and civil liberties infringements. Lin stresses the need for personal privacy protection and actionable steps to safeguard against government surveillance, pointing to various resources for activists and individuals facing increased digital threats. Ultimately, he argues that without federal privacy protections, individuals must act independently to protect their data.

Columns: Say No to Screens. Say Yes To Learning.
By Zoe Yu. Zoe Yu ’27, a Crimson Editorial editor, is a Government concentrator in Pforzheimer House.
Zoe Yu argues that no-screen policies in classrooms foster deeper learning by eliminating distractions and forcing students to engage with material more meaningfully. While initially frustrating, stepping away from technology enhances focus, comprehension, and critical thinking. She contends that discomfort—boredom, frustration, and uncertainty—is essential to the learning process, yet tech often serves as an easy escape from it. By removing screens, students reclaim their attention, engage in richer discussions, and embrace the intellectual challenges that true learning demands. Rather than restricting freedom, Yu suggests, such policies restore it.

Editorials: Who Better To Defend Harvard’s Academic Mission Than Its Faculty?
This Harvard Crimson editorial argues that Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) should have greater influence in university governance. It criticizes the current lack of regular presidential attendance at FAS meetings, highlighting a growing divide between faculty and leadership. The editorial cites last year’s dispute over degrees for pro-Palestine protesters as an example of faculty decisions being overridden by the Harvard Corporation. It advocates for a faculty senate to provide academic voices in decision-making, particularly amid financial pressures, donor influence, and potential political challenges under a second Trump administration.
