[Kebaya – our shared Intangible Cultural Heritage recognised by UNESCO] It is a proud moment for Singapore and Southeast Asia, as the Kebaya: Knowledge, Skills, Traditions and Practices has been successfully inscribed onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity! As Singapore’s second UNESCO inscription, and our first multinational inscription (the largest by Southeast Asia to date, in terms of the number of nominating countries) involving Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, this milestone is certainly one to celebrate. The kebaya is more than just a piece of clothing; it is a living tradition that embodies history, identity and artistry. Kebaya-wearing communities have embraced their own sewing and intricate embroidering styles which represent their cultures, with elements which are reflective of our shared heritage. A significant part of Singapore’s Malay and port city heritage, the Kebaya reflects the unique blend of cultures in Southeast Asia, and is a wonderful representation of our multiculturalism and connections to the region. Let us celebrate together, and continue to cherish and safeguard our rich cultural heritage for generations to come! #WeHeartKebaya National Heritage Board
