China and Nigeria Enhance Bilateral Ties through Mutual Learning

On 16th March 2024, the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria hosted a seminar titled "Promoting Harmony through Mutual Learning," aiming to strengthen the cultural and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China. The event was co-organized by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, the University of Abuja and the China Alumni Association, attracting notable attendees such as H.E Zhang Yi, Chargé D’affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim from the University of Abuja, Mr. Li Xuda, Director of China Cultural Centre, Mr. Muhammad Sulaiman, President of the China Alumni Association, Alh. Yakubu Ibrahim from FCT SEB, Rev. Dr. Anamah Ben-ugo Director of Federal Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, The seminar saw participation from academics and citizens of both nations.

H.E Zhang Yi, Chargé D'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, warmly welcomed attendees to the "Seminar on Promoting Harmony Through Mutual Learning" at the China Cultural Center. Emphasizing the Chinese cultural concept of harmony at various societal levels, He highlighted the significance of harmony in fostering peaceful development and strong state-to-state relations, and introduced the “Sharing Chinese Harmony, Performing Nigeria-China Symphony” initiative, celebrating the deep cultural ties between China and Nigeria. Over the past years, collaborative efforts have included photography and video contests, essay writing, and seminars to showcase the cooperative achievements between the two nations. Today's seminar marks another step in enhancing mutual learning and win-win cooperation.

Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, in his keynote speech, stressed the significance of fostering harmony and mutual learning based on the historical connections between China and Nigeria. He pointed out aspects of China's development model that Nigeria and Africa could emulate, such as the harmonious leadership of the Communist Party of China, a people-focused development strategy, independence, self-reliance, reforms, and modernization.

Muhammad Suleiman emphasized the importance of cultural exchanges alongside economic interactions. He urged Nigerians to adopt values such as punctuality, work ethic, and continuous improvement, which are characteristic of the Chinese approach. He advocated for a strategic focusing on education, public awareness, and the development of vital sectors like health care and software engineering to enhance Nigeria’s economy and foster a deeper harmony with China.

The Cultural Counselor Mr Li Xuda welcomed attendees to the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria and introduced the "Sharing Chinese Harmony & Performing Nigeria-China Symphony" initiative. He stated that this initiative aims to foster cooperation and harmony between Nigeria and China, drawing on the concept of harmony as a traditional value. The speech highlighted the importance of harmony at various levels. He further stated that, Encouraging kindness and respect for nature, Promoting happiness and social stability, Fostering unity and cultural diversity and Advancing peace and development. Mr. Li concluded by saying “The ultimate goal is to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation for the benefit of both nations” and he cited various Essays and Poem from participants of the Essay Competition hosted by the Chinese Embassy two years ago.

 

Other speakers at the event underscored the importance of deepening mutual understanding and learning to benefit both nations and their people.
