Harvard Medical School Researcher Receives Prestigious 2025 Gairdner Award

Spyros Artavanis-Tsakonas, professor emeritus at Harvard Medical School, received the prestigious 2025 Canada Gairdner International Award for his pioneering work on the Notch signaling pathway, a critical system in embryonic development, cell communication, and disease. Over decades, his basic research in fruit flies and mice uncovered how Notch receptors transmit signals and influence cell fates — discoveries now linked to cancer, Alzheimer’s, and ALS. Artavanis-Tsakonas emphasized that deep biological insight can drive novel therapies, calling Notch “a genuine field in biology.”

Twelve Harvard affiliates — including four current students and three recent graduates — have now had their student visas revoked, according to the Harvard International Office (HIO). The revocations follow broader actions by the State Department, which has canceled visas for hundreds of international students across the U.S., some due to pro-Palestine speech. Pritzker ’81 said Harvard is committed to supporting affected students, though no legal action has been announced. The HIO has begun offering “Know Your Rights” sessions in response.

More than $110 million in NIH research grants to Harvard and its affiliated hospitals have been terminated since late February, affecting at least 23 grants tied to institutions like Boston Children’s, Mass General, and Harvard School of Public Health. Many canceled grants involved Covid-19, gender identity, and health equity, with reasons citing misalignment with “agency priorities.” Some projects, like those led by Dan Barouch and Nancy Krieger, faced sudden halts, causing job insecurity, halted research, and legal action, as faculty and staff challenge the cuts in court and appeal to funding agencies.

Congressional Republicans Launch Investigation Into Harvard, Other Ivies for Possible Antitrust Violations

Congressional Republicans have launched an antitrust investigation into Harvard and the other Ivy League universities, alleging collusion to inflate tuition prices and coordinate financial aid practices, according to a letter sent Tuesday by the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. Lawmakers claim the Ivies used enrollment management software, financial aid algorithms, and third-party tools like the College Board to manipulate pricing, accusing them of anti-competitive behavior. The probe also questions Harvard’s NIH indirect cost rates, early admissions policies, and continued collaborative aid practices after an exemption expired in 2022. Harvard must respond by April 22.

Editorials: Trump’s Demands Prove What We Already Knew

The Crimson Editorial Board sharply criticizes the Trump administration’s demands to Harvard, calling them vague, contradictory, and authoritarian, and argues they are not truly about antisemitism but rather a political maneuver to reshape higher education. The letter’s push to eliminate DEI, enforce merit-based admissions, and “install” compliant leadership is seen as a threat to academic freedom. The board urges Harvard to refuse compliance and lead a united defense alongside other institutions to resist what they call a political attack masquerading as reform.

Op Eds: Harvard Shouldn’t Be Coddling Anyone — Liberal or Conservative

In response to Republican criticism over antisemitism at Harvard, Benjamin Isaac argues the University should adopt a consistent, speech-protective standard for all students — neither over-censoring nor coddling anyone based on political views. He critiques the push, particularly from the pro-Israel right, for administrative overreach mirroring the illiberal norms of the left, warning that applying censorship selectively only deepens hypocrisy. Instead, Harvard must combat hate, including antisemitism, while defending free expression and fostering open inquiry, especially amid pressure from the Trump administration.

Is dining with others a sign of happiness?

A Harvard Kennedy School study in the 2025 World Happiness Report found that sharing meals is as predictive of happiness as income or employment, highlighting a strong correlation between communal dining and well-being. Despite this, 1 in 4 Americans ate all meals alone in 2023, a sharp rise since 2003. Co-author Micah Kaats suggests shared meals are a simple, measurable indicator of happiness and a potential target for social policy interventions amid rising isolation and mental health concerns.
