Mazu’s Original Musical Debut

Last weekend, the public welfare performance of Mazu’s original musical staged at the Majiang Theatre in Mawei District for the first time. This original musical is based on reunion and is interpreted in Fuzhou dialect, offering a cultural feast full of warmth and artistic charm to the audience. (Written by Ouyang Jinquan)

The musical is presented by more than 50 actors and dancers. The performance lasts for 100 minutes. The plot is based on the Lantern Festival reunion. It tells the story that Chen Tianfu and his younger brother Chen Tiancai, who run a grocery store in Mazu, are estranged because of their father’s death. In the end, the family is honest with each other and resolves the knot.

In recent years, Mazu has launched a series of original musicals called “Notes on Mazu Mood” to show Mazu’s natural scenery, customs and folk culture, and is currently preparing the seventh one. As the fourth part, the musical insists on performing in the local language, and incorporates many cultures, customs and colloquial words shared by the two places, such as the culture of Xiniang and the accent of Fujian Opera, which aroused the audience’s emotional resonance and deeply felt Mazu culture.

Last weekend was the ninth performance of the musical, and the tenth performance will be performed free of charge at the Opera House of the Straits Cultural and Art Center at 19:30 on March 4. The event was hosted by Mawei District People’s Government, Fuzhou Culture and Tourism Bureau, and undertaken by Mawei Economic and Cultural Exchange and Cooperation Center and Mazu Economic and Cultural Exchange Association.
