A Colourful Life

Jeff Peng said that everyone has their own perspective on life, and there is no definitive answer as to which kind of life is more comfortable. As long as one is content with what they have and lives a simple life, it would be the best way. He described his own life journey of going to college, choosing a major, and getting a Ph.D. as "confused and unclear." He used the concept of "restless" to describe his experience of being unable to tolerate being controlled and dominated by others in a stable job and giving it up. He used the principle of "if you do something, do it well" to describe the successful projects he has created.

Perhaps because he was born in a very honest and simple county in Hunan Province, he has the charm of a village folk, and is easy to get along with and willing to help others. Because he received a lot of support from friends when he was poor as a child, he often helps others when he is able to do so after going abroad. He smiled and said, "I hope all my friends live better than me - so I can share the joy of their success..."

In fact, giving back to society has been Peng's life creed. He actively contributes to society by creating websites to help new immigrants adapt to society, promoting Chinese culture, and enhancing China-Canada exchanges. Peng also supports youth in entrepreneurship, participates in project incubation and promotion, and helps Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises expand their markets.

Peng has served as the president of the Toronto Chinese Media Workers Association and the co-president of the Toronto Chinese Headlines. He also holds positions such as the president of the Canadian Hunan Chamber of Commerce and the chairman of the World Photographer Alliance. The awards he has received include the title of "Immigrant Happiness Ambassador" at the first Canadian Chinese TV Station Immigration Awards, the first "New Maple Harvest" Entrepreneurship Award at the Canadian Fairchild TV Station Immigration Awards, and the first "Son of Hunan" honorary title awarded by the Hunan Provincial Government.

Regarding his own success, Peng remains modest: "I don't boast about myself. If you can achieve results, opportunities will naturally come to you." This is also the owner of the following story's consistent belief in life.

Graduated from Hunan University in 1982.

In 1997, received a doctorate from Strathclyde University in UK.

In March 2013, as a media personnel, greeted the arrival of panda at the Toronto International Airport from China.

Jeff Peng and his Media Devotion

by: Yiren / Tr. By Wendy Lang

Jeff Peng is so ordinary that it is hard to find himthrown into a crowd. However, such an ordinary person, after immigrating to Canada, developed an obsession withmedia and has made an extraordinary career of it.

Coming Out of an Impoverished Hometown

Jeff Peng was born in a very remote and impoverished Guidong County in Hunan Province, China. His father worked as a manager at the Xinhua Bookstore in the county and his mother was a pharmacist in a hospital. Peng is the eldest of the three children; he has younger siblings. Although the life was ordinary then, the children still grew up healthy and happy. Under the influence of his father, Peng is fond of reading ever since he was a child. However, before Peng graduated from high school, a bolt from the blue, his father passed away due to a medical operation accident. His mother had to support the family all by herself and the family financial situation suddenly became stretched tight.

“In order to subsidize my family, I had done jobs such as carrying bricks, selling river sand, and collecting cinders,” Peng said calmly about those sufferings in the past.

After graduating from high school, Peng went to the countryside to work as an educated youth; then, he was recruited to factory as a worker. In those years, you could not go to universities, if you did not have strong family background. Hard life couldn't stop his desire for knowledge, even he seemed to have no chance to go to university. He insisted on self-study when he was not working. “I'm very lucky.” Peng said. After China'sreform and opening up to the world, China resumed the college entrance examination system. In 1978, Peng applied for the examination and was successfully admitted by Hunan University. Holding the admission notice, Peng happily went home to announce the good news, but only learned that his mother was ill and needed major surgery.

Facedwith his mother, who had been under pressure from life for all these years, Peng decided to wait for his mother to complete the operation before deciding whether to go to university or not. But his mother insisted that he had to agree to go to university first, before she would go for the operation. In the end, Peng failed to overcome his mother's insistence. With the support of relatives and friends, he reluctantly left his warm home and embarked on the road of studying.

Encountered the Media

After graduating from university, Peng was detained for teaching after graduating from school.In1991, he went to the University of Strathclyde in Scotland for advanced studies and was chosen to study for a doctorate. At the same time, he was funded by the British National Electricity Corporation to undertake cooperative scientific research projects. The scientific research results were selected and published in professional journals such as IEEE, IEE and Electric Power. After graduating with a Ph.D. in 1997, he immediately returned to China to teach at his Alma mater. However, he had to immigrate to Toronto, Canada because his children could not adapt to domestic education and life in China. Fortunately, he found a good-paying IT job in Telus Communications.

As Peng settled down, he began to find that Chinese people had limited access to local information, especially new immigrants. Most of the time, new immigrants are at a loss as to where and how to get things done, how to arrange children's schools, how to find a job, etc. Often the whole family is in a period of inexplicable anxiety.

He also observed that Chinese colleagues loved to warm their lunch at the company and the smell of the food permeated the room for a long time; during working hours, they chatted loudly on the phone in Chinese, which aroused the attention of other colleagues; some people who went fishing over the weekend or on holidays were reported to the police for straying into or disrespecting private property.

“If everyone can follow the local customs and learn the relevant information in a timely manner, they can better integrate into the society here and live a better and happier life.”Peng said.

On Halloween, he noticed that some Chinese parents took their children down the street to get bags full of candy, but the lights were dark in their own houses and they would not open the doors to children who “Trick or Treat”at their door ways. Peng wondered: “How can you only know to take, but do not know to give?”

He felt something stirring in his heart: "When we Chinese came here to settle down, we should have a master's mentality and make contribution to society. Since our culture has a profound heritage, we have to carry forward to wherever we are at. We should establish our image here and study, work and live here without being humble or overbearing."

He decided to start a website. He said: “The land here is sparsely populated, and the audience from other means is too small. The website is a platform with the widest and most direct audience; through the platform, information can reach the audience at the fastest speed. But my timing wasn't good. It was the trough of the dotcom industry, and one site after another was going out of business. A colleague even showed me a tombstone page of closed websites. On each tombstone of closed websites in that page was the name of a dead site, the date it was founded, the date it was closed, and even the amount of money it had burned off and the last message before it was shut down.”

People around were dissuading, even his wife was not optimistic about this matter. Peng, who normally was easy-going, was unusually stubborn this time. He posted on The Rolia Forum and recruited 7 like-minded companions, so in 2002, “Toronto Online” (torcn.com) was born!

From the establishment of the website, maintenance and update information of it, to the continuous increase in click rate and even a stable customer base, to become one of the Canadian Chinese portals, Peng has been running around with a camera, very active in various community activities.

Moreover, trained as an engineer, he began to write news with his own pictures. He also swaps resources with the “World Journal” -- “World Journal” can use his pictures, and he can use World Journal's manuscripts in “Toronto Online”.

"My text is always accompanied by lots of pictures," Peng said. "People like to read the articles with image. The text is very powerful, but images can convey even stronger on-site impact."

He continued: "Video is even more powerful than pictures. Therefore, I later co-founded a full-license TV station with the support of my fellow hometown-mates from Hunan: Canadian National Television, broadcast via Bell and Rogers. 90% of the content is in Chinese, programs both in Mandarin and Cantonese, and 10% is in English. I also got licenses from some Chinese TV stations to broadcast their programs."

"Unfortunately, the number of our subscribers did not increase enough, and we had to stop running the Station after three or four years. It took a lot of energy and effort to build a TV station thence "Toronto Online" was neglected," Peng said regretfully, but at the same time he was very confident: "the concern from fans of the site never ceases and people often ask about it. Therefore, I am now considering restoring the website, this time we will focus more on commercial marketing; we like to help more enterprises profit; when corporate profits, they can give back to society much more."

Giving back to the community is one of Peng's beliefs. "In the early years, my family was in a difficult situation. Apart from my mother helping me to go to school, I relied on the help of relatives and friends," he said. Indeed, during his four years in university, his notebooks were bound by himself with white paper given by his friends and his clothes were also donated byhis friends. It can be said that he finished his studies with the financial support of the friends he grewup with. "Later on, I worked, studied abroad, immigrated, started a website, and all the other undertakings I have done, all were joint efforts and supported by my friends.I am full of gratitude to my friends and society. I have two life philosophies: first, I will try my best to help others to thank those who have helped me; second, I hopemy friends can live better than me! Therefore, I choose the media, which can best help me achieve my philosophies. Moreover, the role of the media can be played to a relatively extreme level. For example, when the Chinese are treated unfairly or bullied, the media can speak up. When there's a disaster, the media can initiate fundraising."

Enhance Self-significance

"I feel that working in the media has helped me increase my self-significance," said Peng. He gave an example for this.

Twice a year, a team of 10 to 20 medical experts and doctors is sent to China for voluntary exchanges byBethune Medical Development Association of Canada and Bethune Medical Development Foundation of Canada. As a journalist, Peng would follow several small teams to different medical institutions and hospitals to record the integration and impact of academic and medical skills, and record touching moments.

The experts and doctors who go to China sacrifice their annual leaveto provide voluntary treatment, and they are very dedicated. Occasionally the plane arrived late, they would go straight to the hospital for the operating table before they could go to the hotel. Among them, Professor Yves LeClerc, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Mary's General Hospital in Hamilton, Canada, left a deep impression on Peng. Before each major operation, Dr. LeClerc would only eatyogurt and drink little water, and would standat the operating table for four or five hours, or even longer. He always concentrates on the operation wholeheartedly. Once Peng helped to buy a high-speed rail ticket for him. From the passport, he saw that the senior doctor was born in 1948 and was already 68 years old. "His dedication, regardless of his physical engrossment and mental exhaustion, really touched me deeply," Peng said.

"Doctors and specialists who have been to China like China very much," he said. "When they return to Canada, they will tell the real China and praise the speed of development there at various opportunities and occasions. This kind of praise is far more effective than us Chinese saying that China is wonderful!"

Image

He smiled and said: "Some people always say that it is difficult to live in Canada, but Chinese here have advantages living in Canada. The biggest advantage is that they can lean on China. We should build a bridge of communication between Canada and China. As long as we work hard and integrate into society, there will be achievements here!"

In addition to the media he co-founded, Peng is also the co-director of “Chinese HeadlineNews Media” and the President of the Toronto Chinese Media Professional Association. He entered and understood the society through the media, helped many friends and groups, and made many friends of different ethnicity. He is now actively encouraging young entrepreneurs, helping to incubate and promote Web 3.0 projects, and stepping into the next level of "decentralized social media". He said, "I am glad that I have expanded my horizons and reached out to different fields through the media, which has broadened my life path and made my life more meaningful!"

In fact, Peng is not just a media person. He helped the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) expand the Chinese market; during the pandemic, he organized and launched 6 vegetable gardening groups and becamea "vegetable farmer"; he entered the field of financial investment by participating in the company's restructuring, mergers, acquisitions and listing. He has also won various awards, such as the title of the first "Happy Immigrant Ambassador" of Canadian Chinese TV, Fairchild Television's“New Maple Leaf Entrepreneurship Award” for new immigrants, the honorary title of the first "Son of Hunan" issued by the Hunan Provincial Government, etc. He has also held positions in various industry organizations: President of Hunan Chamber of Commerce in Canada, Co-Chairman of Federation of Canadian Chinese Chambers of Commerce, Vice-President of Canada China Mining & Minerals Association (CCMMA), Senior Consultant of Canadian Mobile E-commerce Overseas Platform, and Chairman of International Photographers Federation.
