At the Asian Festival in Cary, NC, we met with our CAFA/RACL joint dragon boat team. There, we interviewed Michael, who was also a member of the dragon boat racing team. However, as a native American, he stood out among the large group of Chinese participants.

First, we asked him why he chose to attend the Asian Festival. He naturally explains, “My wife is from China and trying to befriend the Chinese people in the nearby community.” He later told me he had lived in China for over 12 years, which should be an important reason for his visit.

He then elaborated on his feelings and expectations for the race. “It’s much, much more difficult than I thought.” He said, “It’s only about one and a half minutes, but you have to be in sync with your teammates, otherwise it doesn’t work.” Rowing the paddles requires not only your force, but, more crucially, the technique: Using the power of the whole body is the key so that the arms would not be so tired. He said his team was now in the B group (The second top one) and had a good chance of winning.

When explaining the reason that he chose Cary specifically to live in, he told me a bit about his “moving trip”. He originally taught English in Shanghai and is also an excellent YouTuber. He has recently returned to the United States and traveled across the country. After considering various things including climate, education for his son, and community diversity, he and his wife finally decided to reside in Cary. “I love the slow pace here.” He said with certainty.

Apart from Michael, we also have a brilliant captain, Li Bing, on that team. He said proudly, “This team has been competing for five years and won the B group championship in four. The biggest characteristic of this team is that everyone has a strong desire to win.”

The most important aspect of the dragon boat race is that it requires collective action. There are 20 paddlers and 1 drummer on the boat and everyone must be highly coordinated in order to turn 20 individuals into one unified force.

He additionally emphasized that, according to the rules, there must be at least 8 female team members, and their role cannot be underestimated. Their absolute strength may not match that of men, but their coordination and sense of rhythm are often better. They are in the first, second, and last rows of the boat, with the task of maintaining the rhythm, thereby maximizing the power of the male paddlers in the middle.

Li Bing later mentioned that he had never experienced a dragon boat before those races; it was by chance that he participated in an event years ago and found it really enjoyable. The joy this collective activity brings him has surpassed that of other individual sports- “it’s better to enjoy together than to enjoy alone.”

Though very eager to win, all the team members deeply understand the core principle: In this sport, you need to allow others to be better than you. As Li Bing said at last, “As long as we do what we need to do, it’s our victory. We are competing against ourselves.”
