More than 500 Harvard alumni signed an open letter urging University President Alan M. Garber to publicly defend free speech and institutional independence in light of the Trump administration’s crackdown on pro-Palestine activism and threats to higher education. The letter, prompted by the arrest and deportation threat against Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil, warns that federal pressure on universities like Columbia could soon extend to Harvard. Signatories—including Nobel laureate Eric Maskin and journalist James Fallows—called the situation a serious threat to academic freedom, demanding Harvard affirm its commitment to protect students’ rights amid political interference.

The Harvard chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has joined a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that efforts to arrest and deport noncitizen pro-Palestine students and faculty violate First and Fifth Amendment rights. Filed with other AAUP chapters and the Middle East Studies Association, the suit claims the administration’s actions create a climate of fear on campuses and restrict academic freedom and political expression. Harvard faculty involved emphasized the chilling effect on speech and research. The lawsuit also alleges arbitrary enforcement, violating due process and federal administrative law.

Editorials: Harvard Opened Its Wallet. Now It Must Open Its Doors

In a staff editorial, The Crimson Editorial Board praises Harvard’s expanded financial aid policy, which will now fully cover students from families earning under $100,000 and offer free tuition up to $200,000—despite looming federal funding threats from the Trump administration. While the move is applauded as a bold reaffirmation of higher education’s public mission, the Board argues it falls short of addressing Harvard’s persistent socioeconomic inequality. True accessibility, they contend, requires deeper admissions reform, proactive low-income recruitment, and greater transparency. To truly foster socioeconomic diversity, Harvard must not only open its wallet, but also its doors.

Columns: Give the Land Up — Or Shut Up

In his column, Henry P. Moss IV ’26 critiques Harvard’s use of land acknowledgements, arguing they amount to performative activism with no tangible impact. He challenges the sincerity of such gestures, claiming they serve more to enhance institutional image than to right historical wrongs. Moss questions the logic of symbolic restitution without action, suggesting that unless Harvard is willing to return land to Indigenous tribes, such statements are hollow. He also critiques the broader premise of land acknowledgements, citing the global history of conquest, and calls into question their consistency, efficacy, and historical coherence.

Columns: What Good Is a University Without Students?

In her column, Allison P. Farrell ’26 criticizes Harvard’s financial priorities, arguing the University is undermining its core mission of education by continuing costly infrastructure projects while restricting Ph.D. admissions and freezing faculty hiring amid political and financial pressures. Highlighting national trends in graduate program cuts and the chilling effect of Trump-era policies, she urges Harvard to resist over-cautious budgeting and affirm its commitment to academic growth. Despite recent expansions in undergraduate financial aid, Farrell warns that deprioritizing graduate education sends a dangerous precedent: a university without students cannot fulfill its purpose.

Flyby: A Taste of the Upperclassman Houses (Literally)

In a humorous Flyby blog post, Cristian D. Dominguez ranks Harvard’s upperclassman Houses by comparing each to a food item, delivering a mix of playful jabs and odd compliments. From Adams as an overrated cheese fondue fountain to Lowell as a dependable lemon garlic chicken, each House is served with sarcasm and satire. Quincy’s Grille earns it a tasty cheeseburger, while Eliot is roasted as rotten fish for past IM drama. Though meant in jest, the ranking embraces controversy and equal-opportunity teasing, poking fun at House stereotypes while keeping Housing Day spirit alive.

Research says use vulnerability when disagreeing with others

Harvard Kennedy School’s Julia Minson emphasizes that in disagreements, the goal shouldn't be to win, but to build a bridge for continued dialogue. In her research with David Hagmann and Catherine H. Tinsley, she found that personal narratives foster trust across ideological divides more effectively than facts alone. By sharing a story that reveals personal stakes or values, individuals can connect emotionally, making their perspective more resonant and encouraging open, ongoing conversation.

Teaching Students How to Challenge Injustice

A new book, Educating for Justice, by Harvard lecturer Aaliyah El-Amin and co-authors Scott Seider and Julia Bott, offers a research-backed, schoolwide approach to help K–12 students recognize, analyze, and challenge systemic injustice—without sacrificing academic goals. Key strategies include teacher self-reflection, fostering critical consciousness, integrating justice topics across subjects, and partnering with families and communities. The authors stress that real learning must involve action, not just awareness. They argue that teaching for justice builds both academic skills and civic responsibility, empowering students to transform their world.

Early detection of Alzheimer’s may start with simple test

Researchers at Mass General Brigham, affiliated with Harvard, have developed an at-home smell test to help identify individuals at risk of Alzheimer’s disease years before symptoms appear. The Aromha Brain Health Test measures participants’ ability to identify, remember, and distinguish odors. In a recent study, older adults with mild cognitive impairment scored lower than cognitively healthy peers, regardless of language or observation. Led by Dr. Mark Albers, the research supports the use of olfactory testing as a noninvasive, cost-effective early detection tool for neurodegenerative diseases.
