Harvard Sees Surge in Flu Cases Following National Trend
Harvard is experiencing a surge in flu cases, mirroring national trends. Students report difficulties obtaining flu medication due to national shortages, though supplies are intermittently restocked. The CDC has classified Massachusetts' flu severity as “very high” since early February, with flu-related doctor visits increasing sharply. Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) confirms rising cases and provides discounted medical supplies. Some students sought urgent care, receiving IV drips and flu tests, while others opted against medication. The outbreak continues to spread, with students frequently reporting new cases.

‘It's Not Like Goodbye’: Students Seek Convenience, Friends With Interhouse Transfer
By Hiral M. Chavre and Darcy G Lin
Nearly 200 Harvard students applied for interhouse transfers this semester, many hoping to leave the Radcliffe Quadrangle for more convenient housing closer to friends and campus activities. While some, like Kyle E. Neeley ’26, successfully transferred to live with friends, others were rejected and plan to reapply in May. Students cited proximity to extracurriculars, housing infrastructure, and family considerations as key reasons for transferring. Dissatisfaction with some Houses’ layouts and aesthetics also played a role. Despite the changes, many students emphasized maintaining connections with their original House communities.

Khurana Says He Will Focus on ‘Recentering Academics’ in Last Semester as College Dean
Harvard College Dean Rakesh Khurana plans to focus on "recentering academics" in his final semester, emphasizing intellectual engagement and combating grade inflation. He supports policies like the Chatham House rules to encourage open discussion and discourage self-censorship among students. While he won’t be involved in selecting his successor, Khurana stresses that the next dean should deeply engage with students. After stepping down, he will return to teaching organizational sociology. He reiterated that Harvard’s mission is to educate future leaders, not just serve as a credentialing institution.

Keeping cool when debate turns hot
Harvard’s Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Ethics hosted the Challenging Barriers to Civil Discourse conference, bringing together global scholars to explore fostering productive discussions on contentious topics. FAS Dean Hopi Hoekstra emphasized universities’ role in modeling civil dialogue. Speakers shared insights from Alternative Dispute Resolution, Martin Luther King Jr.'s "beloved community", and nonpolitical social engagement to build empathy. Scholars debated balancing discourse, stability, and diversity, with some advocating for more open debate. The conference also introduced Harvard’s new Ethics Center research and design studio to further civil discourse initiatives.

Columns: Administrative Reports Won’t Make Students Speak Their Minds
A recent Crimson opinion piece argues that Harvard's approach to free speech—issuing administrative reassurances—fails to address the real problem: a campus culture where disagreement feels risky. A Faculty of Arts and Sciences report found only 35% of seniors felt comfortable expressing opposing views on controversial topics, suggesting social pressures, not formal censorship, are the issue. The author contends that real change requires normalizing intellectual conflict, encouraging open debate without excessive caution. Instead of more policies, Harvard should foster an environment where disagreement is seen as essential to learning.

Columns: Harvard, I Have More Than Seven Friends
A Crimson opinion piece criticizes Harvard’s removal of “linking” in the housing process, arguing that it has made blocking more stressful and exclusive. Previously, students could link two groups, ensuring proximity to more friends. Now, with only eight spots per block, students face a competitive, exclusionary selection process, leading to fractured friendships and social anxiety. The author contends that this change undermines fairness, reverses historical progress toward inclusivity, and even complicates romantic relationships. Ultimately, they call for Harvard to reconsider its decision and restore linking.

Flyby: A Case for Renaming FlyBy
A Crimson writer humorously argues that Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) should rename its to-go meal service, FlyBy, to avoid confusion with The Harvard Crimson’s blog, Flyby. The author recounts repeatedly having to clarify that they write for the blog, not the meal service, and proposes several alternative names: Hurryvard, HUDS Express, VeriFly, VeriQuick, HUDS n’ Go, and Grab & Go. They emphasize that a clearer name would help distinguish the services and better reflect HUDS’ function. The piece calls for a long-overdue change to end the mix-up.
Flyby:FlyBy

Hinting at answer to a chicken-or-egg question on evolution
A study led by Felix Elling may resolve whether oxygen production by photosynthesis or its consumption via aerobic metabolism evolved first. Researchers discovered methyl-plastoquinone, a molecule in nitrogen-utilizing bacteria, which appears to be a missing link between the two metabolic processes. This suggests that some bacteria may have used oxygen even before cyanobacteria began producing it during the Great Oxidation Event (~2.4 billion years ago). The findings imply that oxygen production and consumption co-evolved, shaping life’s biochemical pathways, including how humans breathe today.
