On a crisp autumn day in Columbia, South Carolina, where the skies are high and the clouds drift freely, it's the perfect season to enjoy art. The Columbia Museum of Art is hosting “French Moderns: Monet to Matisse 1850-1950”,an exhibition featuring works provided by the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Reporters from The South Carolina Daily were invited to attend and report on this special event.
This exhibition showcases 60 oil paintings and sculptures from the Brooklyn Museum’s collection. Its aim is to highlight the beauty and essence of French painting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when France was the global center of art. The collection spans creations from 1848, the year of the European revolutions, to the end of World War II, a period marked by profound intellectual, political, and social transformations.
The artists featured in the exhibition include Monet, Cézanne, Degas, and Rodin, covering major art movements like Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The exhibit is divided into four sections: Landscapes, Nudes, Still Lifes, and Portrait Models. It begins with Impressionist explorations of outdoor painting, showcasing the innovative styles and techniques of French artists. The exhibit also features works by foreign artists drawn to France’s vibrant artistic environment, such as the Russian-born Marc Chagall and the Italian Giovanni Boldini.
Since the exhibition opened on October 5, the Columbia Museum of Art reports that more than 1,000 visitors have come to see the collection. When the reporter arrived at the museum around noon, a group of young students was being led into the gallery by a guide. They walked slowly, studying each work in detail, tracing the evolution of French art from realism to abstraction.

The exhibition begins with landscapes, including masterpieces like Monet's The Rising Tide at Pourville, The Parliament Building, and Alfred Sisley’s The Flood at Moret. In his piece The Parliament Building, Monet applies his mature Impressionist style to an urban scene. Here, Monet softens the architectural details of the iconic building, focusing instead on layering colors and capturing shimmering reflections on the water. He merges London’s Parliament building with the ever-shifting light and natural ambiance of the foggy cityscape.

In the section devoted to nudes and sculptures, works by Degas, like Model Brushing Her Hair and Nude Woman Wiping Her Body, are displayed alongside Rodin’s The Age of Bronze and Balzac in a Monk's Robe. In The Age of Bronze, Rodin’s male figure stands on a stone pedestal with his body slightly tilted, muscles defined and powerful, with his right hand raised to his head as if in thought or struggle. The figure's pose and expression convey complex, conflicting emotions, inviting viewers to feel a deep sense of strength. The intricate details—muscles, bones, and skin texture—demonstrate Rodin’s expertise in human anatomy and his fine perception of life’s nuances. Originally titled The Conqueror, Rodin later renamed the piece The Age of Bronze, symbolizing humanity’s awareness and strength in confronting the world and themselves as they grow.
Entering the still life gallery, the reporter saw that artists attracted viewers' senses through the depiction of fine fabrics, ripe fruits, and tables bathed in warm sunlight. 20th-century artists used the power of still life to evoke sensations that transcend the physical, inviting viewers to connect with inner and spiritual realms.

Among the numerous portraits and figure paintings, the reporter lingered for a long time in front of Berthe Morisot's Madame Boursier and Her Daughter. As the only female master of Impressionism, Morisot brought a sensitive eye to mother-daughter relationships and the emotional lives of women. In this work, Morisot depicts a warm scene of a young mother and her daughter sitting together. The mother’s face is gentle, her gaze focused on her child, exuding love and care. The daughter, absorbed in her own activities, reflects innocence and purity. Morisot’s soft brushstrokes and harmonious color choices perfectly capture this intimate relationship. The overall pale color palette creates a warm, soothing atmosphere, expressing both the emotional bond between mother and child and the Impressionists’ keen ability to capture light and color.
In The End of a Working Day by Jules Breton, three timeless French women are portrayed. After a long day in the potato fields, they are preparing to wrap up their work as the setting sun casts a warm glow over them. This idealized portrayal of rural laborers reflects the impact of the 1848 democratic revolutions on later artists. Breton once remarked, “Art no longer serves the gods but now honors the dignity of workers.”
