A new study is advancing efforts to understand how ovarian cancer arises so more patients can one day be diagnosed and treated early, improving and saving lives.

Researchers led by Sandro Santagata at HMS and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Ronny Drapkin at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine combined powerful tissue-profiling technologies to track changes in protein levels (using cyclic immunofluorescence, or CyCIF) and spatial transcriptomics (using GeoMx) in human tissue samples at various stages of cancer development. They have made the data, reported in Cancer Discovery, explorable by other scientists.

The team identified changes that occur during early development of the most common form of ovarian cancer, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, or HGSOC. More than 200,000 people worldwide die of HGSOC each year, in part because symptoms don’t appear — and thus the disease isn’t diagnosed — until the cancer has advanced.

The team studied samples from fallopian tubes, where ovarian cancer begins. Some of the samples were p53-positive, which are still considered benign; others contained more advanced precancerous lesions, known as serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas (STIC); and others constituted invasive ovarian cancer.

The researchers identified specific molecular changes as cells became early STICs, advanced STICs, and cancer. They also observed that immune signaling in the tumor microenvironment shifted so the immune system was less capable of intervening as the cancerous process progressed. This decline in anti-tumor immune activity likewise began at the early STIC stage.

“We hope that the changes we and others are now able to identify thanks to this unprecedented view of ovarian cancer development will lead to much-needed biomarkers for early detection of ovarian cancer and a window of opportunity to treat the disease before symptoms appear,” said co-first author Tanjina Kader of the HMS Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology.

Harvard Undergraduate Bhangra is Harvard University’s premier competitive South Asian dance team. Bhangra is an energetic style of dance, music, and art that originates from the agrarian practices of the
Punjab region but is now performed on a global scale. Although Bhangra was traditionally performed to
celebrate Vaisakhi, or the Spring Harvest, today, we celebrate Bhangra in fusion with Punjabi folk, hip-hop, rap, and other forms of South Asian music.

Harvard Philippine Forum | Horizon 2024

Members of the Harvard Philippine Forum will showcase traditional and modern versions of tinikling, a
Filipino barrio-style dance in which two dancers deploy strategic footwork between clapping bamboo
poles. Inspired by the grace of the hopping tikling bird and by the defiance exhibited by Filipino field
workers who dodged bamboo-stick strikes to their ankles during the time of Spanish colonization, the
dancers will use rhythm and choreography to tell a story of love, community, and resistance across borders and generations. HPF has also prepared a modern version of tinkling, combining common tinikling steps with open-style movements.
hustle | pH-1, j-hope, WOODZ Choreography

Just quit now, pack it up. Do you go hard? Then back it up.

hustle is about the grind and constant chaos of life. It's easy to be hard on ourselves - when we're not
living up to our expectations, it feels like there's no other option but to PACKITUP and go home. Other
times, the only way we escape the constant cycle of work, eating, and sleep is by hiding in a
DAYDREAM. This open-style dance with elements of house footwork and 90s hip-hop grooves
encourages viewers to BUCK the oppressive responsibilities that society puts on them, even if they
burn out trying. We hope you enjoy!

splashes of serendipity (嬉水玩乐) | 王开煜(王将左隆) Choreography

splish splash!

This traditional Chinese dance is inspired by two Dai dances,《喜水》and《水的女儿》.

Dai is an
ethnic minority primarily found in the Yunnan province. They exhibit a rich culture and history, and
even have their own language and calendar. The Dai people often showcase dances at festive
celebrations, including the annual Water Splashing Festival and Buddhist rituals. We intend to
appreciate and celebrate this culture with our audiences, while acknowledging there is much more
complexity and nuance to the Dai people than this three minute dance can capture.

This dance in particular explores joy and friendship. It emanates a scene where friends play with water
and spontaneously splash each other, erupting in light-hearted laughter. We hope to bring some
smiles and lightness to your day through this dance!

wow, that's hot | Charli XCX, Denise Julia, Rina Sawayama Choreography

Original and Adapted Choreography by Yanyan Zeng '25 | Adapted from Denise Julia,
Dom Guyot, Macky Quiobe

This dance, as the title suggests, is about having fun and feeling hot. "wow, that's hot" combines jazz,
open-style, and heels choreography to create a three-part piece, featuring 360 by Charli XCX, B.A.D. by
Denise Julia, and This Hell by Rina Sawayama. We open the dance with 360, where dancers will be
SERVING LOOKS and channeling their inner pop icons. The tight and precise movements in this
section mirror the constant and nearly robotic rhythm of the music. Next, we move to B.A.D., a piece
that lets dancers explore their sensual side and uses some heels-inspired choreography. In this more
subtle interlude, we embrace femininity and sexuality with floor work and dynamic movements.
Finally, the piece ends with This Hell, a confident "girlboss" anthem about embracing one's identity
and finding a shared community in uniqueness. With more theatrical and hard-hitting choreography,
this section expresses the joy of rebellion and unabashedly being yourself.

Throughout the semester, dancers have worked extremely hard to perfect their musicality, textures,
and stage presence. Please enjoy and give them a huge round of applause!

Flagship: 秋日

Adapted Choreography by Jodie Kuo '26 and Karena Yan SEAS '24.5 | Adapted from
吴欢 (Wu Huan) | Original Performance by 上海歌舞团 (Shanghai Song and Dance
Troupe)

Flagship is AADT’s oldest lasting traditional heritage performance with a greater focus on advanced
techniques representative of Asian classical, ethnic, and folk dance styles.
This semester, Flagship presents a Chinese traditional dance fusing contemporary and folk elements.
秋日, or Autumn Days, depicts scenes from a fall harvest. This dance uses a liangmao (涼帽) as a prop,
which is a traditional hat worn when performing outdoor work such as farming or fishing. The
liangmao has most commonly been made and worn by the Hakka people, a Han Chinese subgroup
presently concentrated in the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of southern China. In this dance, we
acknowledge the liangmao as a symbol of Hakkan culture and celebrate moments of tranquility, joy,
and camaraderie through harvest.

Original Choreography by Daniel Pham ‘26 and Sho Sho Leigha Ho ‘24.5

noun 1. a feeling of intense pleasure or joy.

verb 2. the transporting of aadt dancers to some euphoric utopia.

We all have things we desire, institutions (including this one!) that we form our identities around. In
this dance, we will explore what worship can look like in large groups. When we exist within a crowd,
do we do so to make an idea visible to others, or are we making a certain feeling available in ourselves?
Pressing against the sweaty, undulating bodies of strangers, it can feel as though one’s will is just one
strand of a collective rope pulling one forward--pulling all of us forward together. What would it mean
to exist within a crowd responsibly, rather than blindly reveling in a temporary swell of purpose and
emotion?

Perhaps we have all been drawn to that aspiration at some point or another, drunk on the possibility of
our own power within a crowd. Groups of people convocating toward the same goal instills in each
individual more influence and drive than they can muster alone.

The HLS Student Gov. Wants a Referendum Against Library Bans. One by One, Planned Votes Have Fallen Through.

The Harvard Law School Student Government’s referendum opposing disciplinary penalties for pro-Palestine protest participants has faced multiple delays, with three planned voting dates falling through amid disputes with Dean of Students Stephen L. Ball. Originally proposed in November, the referendum calls for lifting library bans, expunging disciplinary records, and ending alleged intimidation tactics by the administration. Delays stem from administrative disagreements over the voting process, sparking accusations of repression from student leaders and organizers, who claim the administration fears the referendum’s potential to reveal widespread student discontent.

The Harvard Law School Student Government's proposed referendum condemning penalties for pro-Palestine protesters has been repeatedly postponed.

Harvard Hires MAGA-Linked Lobbying Firm Amid Congressional Probes, Threats To Tax Its $53 Billion Endowment

Harvard University has hired Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with Trump ties, to address threats to its $53 billion endowment and ongoing probes into campus anti-Semitism. Harvard President Alan Garber aims to adopt a more diplomatic approach during Trump’s second term, contrasting with past opposition to Trump-era policies. Key concerns include potential increases in endowment taxes, with proposals reaching 35%, and reduced federal funding. The hiring follows heightened scrutiny over anti-Semitic incidents and controversial testimony by former President Claudine Gay, marking a strategic shift in Harvard’s political engagement.

Brain health rests on heart health: Guidelines for lifestyle changes

Dementia, including Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, is closely linked to heart health, with lifestyle changes significantly reducing risk. Regular exercise (150+ minutes weekly), a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, and avoiding processed foods, smoking, and excessive alcohol are key preventive measures recommended by WHO. These habits improve arterial health, which is crucial for brain blood flow and clearing harmful proteins linked to Alzheimer’s. Even those with a family history or mild cognitive impairment can benefit from heart-healthy choices, aligning brain health with cardiovascular wellness.

Alzheimer's and vascular dementias — are now thought to be closely related to, and greatly impacted by, the same diet and lifestyle factors.
