Bile imbalance linked to liver cancer - Key molecular switch identified, sheds new light on treatment interventions

Harvard’s Yingzi Yang and her team at HSDM identified a key molecular switch where YAP activation disrupts FXR, a bile acid sensor, leading to bile buildup, liver injury, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Published in Nature Communications, the study suggests that restoring FXR function or enhancing bile acid excretion could block cancer progression. These findings open new paths for pharmacological interventions in liver cancer, with broader implications for metabolic control and nutrient sensing.

He got the stop-work order. Then the scrambling began.

After Harvard rejected the Trump administration’s demands, Don Ingber at the Wyss Institute received a stop-work order halting two major organ-on-a-chip projects worth $19 million. Ingber rushed to protect researchers and students, finding temporary funding and reallocating staff while warning that America’s innovation engine — built on government-academia collaboration — is at risk. His projects, vital for radiation damage and spaceflight health research, are now in limbo, with international talent also deterred from joining Harvard amid rising fears.

At Rally in Harvard Square, Protesters Accuse Harvard of Complicity With Trump

Protesters Criticize Harvard’s Response to Trump and Palestine Speech

More than 100 protesters gathered at Cambridge Common for a Global Day of Action for Gaza rally, accusing Harvard of suppressing pro-Palestine speech while resisting Trump administration demands. Sponsored by unrecognized groups like HOOP and Jews 4 Palestine, the protest saw banners hung on Johnston Gate, counterprotesters blasting music, and chants condemning Harvard’s investments in Israel. Speakers criticized Harvard’s dismissal of faculty, the revocation of student visas, and what they called hypocrisy in Harvard’s stance on free speech and fascism.

6 Harvard Students, Recent Grads Have Visa Status Restored

Six of the 12 Harvard students and recent graduates who had their student visas revoked now have active status restored, according to the Harvard International Office. Following court rulings deeming mass visa terminations illegal, the Justice Department announced that thousands of student visas nationwide would be reinstated. While some revocations were tied to pro-Palestine activism or minor infractions, Harvard remains unclear on the specific causes for its affiliates. The update comes ahead of Harvard’s required response to a DHS threat concerning international student monitoring.

Columns: Conservatives Deserve Better than the Salient

In her column, Katie H. Martin ’28 critiques the Harvard Salient, arguing that instead of promoting free speech and intellectual rigor, the conservative publication relies on inflammatory rhetoric and dogmatic claims. Martin criticizes the lack of engagement with opposing viewpoints, the dismissal of non-Christian perspectives, and the unsupported controversial opinions on topics like abortion and transgender rights. She urges the Salient to foster genuine debate and rigorous discourse, insisting that true conservatism at Harvard deserves a more credible and persuasive platform.

Visitas, Not Veritas: A Time For Reinvention

In a humorous column,  Annette Kim and Raymond Wu encourages incoming Harvard students to use Visitas as a chance for reinvention, offering playful identities like a descendant of John Harvard, a CIA agent, or Genovian royalty. Chen jokes that students can even pretend to be a PhD candidate — but ultimately reminds them that simply being themselves is enough. Visitas, she writes, should be a time to relax, have fun, and embrace new beginnings after the hard work of getting into Harvard.

How to Emulate a Harvard Local

In a playful Visitas guide, Melissa C. Suquisupa and Sneha M. Yelamanchili offer tips for prefrosh to blend in and act like a Harvard local: ditch the lanyard, avoid touching the John Harvard foot, fake knowledge of campus coffee spots like Faro and Blue Bottle, and joke about Datamatch and Yardfest. They suggest dropping casual Boston references and responding to tour guides in-the-know ways, encouraging new admits to spark a fun alter ego while enjoying their first Harvard experience.

Do They Even Go Here?

In a humorous Visitas survival guide,  Stephany Gutierrez shares tips on spotting real prefrosh versus possible imposters: check for the Visitas lanyard, Google their name, stalk LinkedIn, demand a reaction video, and beware of AI-generated profile pics. Amid the chaotic blur of events and introductions, Chen reminds prefrosh to stay alert — because not everyone wandering Harvard Yard may actually belong to the Class of 2029.

NYTimes: Harvard’s Endowment Is $53.2 Billion. What Should It Be For?

Facing federal funding freezes under the Trump administration, Harvard’s $53.2 billion endowment has come under new scrutiny. Critics argue that elite universities should tap their vast wealth during crises instead of guarding it as "untouchable." Rooted in the principle of intergenerational equity, Harvard’s cautious spending tradition collides with urgent needs for academic freedom and public good. The article explores debates over endowment use, donor restrictions, borrowing options, and how universities’ immense wealth risks alienating the public while fueling political backlash.

NBC News: Harvard students and faculty face the fallout from a showdown with Trump - Many describe a changed campus, one where the “best and brightest” may no longer feel welcome.

As the Trump administration freezes $2.2 billion in federal funding and threatens Harvard’s nonprofit status and ability to host international students, the campus atmosphere has turned fearful and uncertain. Students and faculty describe heightened anxiety, layoffs, canceled research, visa revocations, and intensified surveillance fears. President Alan Garber insists Harvard must defend academic freedom, but many international students feel like "poker chips" caught in political crossfire. Despite Harvard’s $53.2 billion endowment, the financial and emotional toll is already substantial and growing.
