After an eight-year hiatus due to House renovations and COVID delays, the Lowell House Opera returned to their historic performance space—the Lowell House dining hall—with a production of “Postcard from Morocco.” Set in a train station in 1914, the opera explores the human mind through seven travelers. Harvard Professor Stefanie Stantcheva on Zero-Sum Political Thinking Harvard Professor Stefanie Stantcheva explores zero-sum thinking in Democrats and Republicans. Across American politics, one mindset shapes views on policy and society: the “zero-sum” mentality. Stefanie Stantcheva, Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy and Founder of the Social Economics Lab at Harvard University describes how zero-sum cognitive framing—exhibited by both Democrats and Republicans—profoundly influences debates on issues ranging from immigration, to taxation, to race- and gender-based affirmative action. This belief holds that the gains of one individual or group come at the expense of another—the “pie” of resources is fixed, and any larger slice for one must mean a smaller share for everyone else. This worldview contrasts with the notion of a “positive-sum” society, where collective prosperity can grow to include all players. Stancheva's lab reveals a striking finding: zero-sum thinking is not confined to one political party. It exists on both sides of the ideological divide, and while it appears differently depending on the issue, it always impacts political discourse and policy.
The one mistake people make in a disagreement Professor Julia Minson says the number one mistake people make in a disagreement is that they’re not clear about their goals. She notes it’s not about winning or changing someone’s mind, but instead about building a bridge to the next conversation.

The Government Details Its Demands

The Trump administration has delivered a sweeping list of demands to Harvard University tied to a $9 billion review of federal funding. The letter, issued by the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, outlines requirements for “lasting, structural reforms” as a condition for continued funding. These include:

  • Oversight of academic programs accused of antisemitic harassment and “ideological capture
  • Centralized and enforceable disciplinary reform, including a mask ban and specific reporting on incidents since October 7, 2023
  • Accountability for student groups
  • Meaningful governance reforms” in Harvard’s structure
  • Transition to “merit-basedadmissions and hiring, banning preferences based on race, color, sex, or national origin
  • Elimination of all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs
  • Full cooperation with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other law enforcement
  • Enhanced transparency and compliance with federal reporting rules

The letter accuses Harvard of failing to protect against antisemitism but also advances broader Trump administration goals like ending DEI initiatives and increasing immigration enforcement. Though less aggressive than demands made to Columbia, these directives still represent a broad political intervention into university governance, academic freedom, and civil rights enforcement, with no legal evidence cited.

Harvard President Alan Garber has indicated willingness to engage with the government, but pressure is mounting from faculty to reject what many view as authoritarian overreach.

Harvard faculty says university must resist Trump demands

Harvard faculty are urging the university to resist demands from the Trump administration threatening to strip $9 billion in federal funding unless it eliminates DEI programs, bans masked protests, and cooperates with federal immigration enforcement. Professors like Ryan Enos and Kirsten Weld (head of Harvard’s AAUP chapter) say the demands are authoritarian overreach, aimed at silencing criticism of Israel and controlling academia. Former Harvard President Lawrence Summers called the administration’s actions abusive and warned of threats to American democracy. Harvard President Alan Garber emphasized the university’s commitment to academic freedom and combating antisemitism, but has not announced a definitive response.
