Rewriting genetic destiny

David Liu, a Harvard professor and pioneer of base editing and prime editing, developed revolutionary gene-editing tools that are now being used in at least 18 clinical trials, including the life-saving treatment of a teenager with T-cell leukemia. As a Harvard undergraduate, Liu conducted research with Nobel laureate Elias James Corey and graduated first in his class. After earning a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, he returned to Harvard as an assistant professor at just 26. Unlike traditional CRISPR, which acts like DNA scissors, Liu’s methods precisely correct genetic mutations at the single-base level or through DNA rewriting, offering hope to millions with genetic diseases. Liu credits decades of basic science research — tracing back to the discovery of CRISPR in E. coli — as essential to these breakthroughs.

Harvard Asks Judge to Expedite Lawsuit Against Trump Admin, Declines to Request Emergency Injunction

Harvard has asked a federal judge to expedite its lawsuit against the Trump administration over the $2 billion federal funding freeze, seeking summary judgment instead of an emergency injunction. The University argues that the freeze violates First Amendment rights and Title VI due process protections, threatening critical research and academic freedom. Harvard is focusing its legal strategy on the administrative record, demanding the release of internal government communications, including from a multi-agency antisemitism taskforce. The Department of Justice has not yet responded but is expected to submit records that may become central to the case.

As Deadline to Address DHS Letter Nears, Experts Say Harvard Should Sue — Again

As the deadline nears for Harvard to respond to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) letter demanding information on international students’ disciplinary and protest activities, legal experts recommend the University consider filing a second lawsuit. The DHS has threatened to revoke Harvard’s SEVP certification, jeopardizing the status of over 6,500 international students. Experts argue the DHS demands exceed statutory authority, violate FERPA, and infringe on free speech rights. Some advise limited compliance first, while others urge immediate legal action to protect Harvard’s ability to host foreign students.

Sen. Rick Scott Backs Trump’s Attacks on Harvard at HKS Talk

At a Harvard Institute of Politics forum, Senator Rick Scott backed the Trump administration’s actions against Harvard, supporting efforts to revoke the University’s federal funding and questioning its tax-exempt status. Scott insisted Harvard must comply with federal laws, including those concerning antisemitism and student visa enforcement. In response to Harvard’s lawsuit challenging the funding freeze, Scott echoed Trump’s claim that the University engages in discriminatory practices. He also defended high tariffs on China and proposed ending all U.S.-China trade, arguing economic warfare is needed to prevent military conflict.

Khurana Says College Could Have To Make Sacrifices Amid Funding Freeze

As Harvard College faces uncertainty amid the Trump administration’s $2.2 billion funding freeze, outgoing Dean Rakesh Khurana urged students to focus on academics, despite the university's central role in a national debate over free speech and institutional independence. Khurana acknowledged that sacrifices may be necessary if Harvard’s legal challenge fails, hinting at potential cuts to non-essential programs and a greater reliance on classroom-based skill development in place of paid research opportunities. While the impact on undergraduates remains unclear, Khurana expressed hope, citing alumni support and Harvard’s historical role in defending academic freedom.

As Unfounded ICE Rumors Spread Across Campus, Harvard Has Stayed Quiet

Amid rumors of ICE presence during Harvard’s April 18 protest against Trump’s funding cuts and threats to international students, the University has remained silent, frustrating international students seeking reassurance. Despite no evidence of ICE activity and denials from campus police, Harvard has yet to issue a public statement clarifying the situation — a stark contrast to other schools like Yale and UMass Amherst, which acted swiftly to dispel similar fears. As anxiety grows due to visa revocations and arrests at other campuses, students are calling for greater transparency and institutional support.Spread Across Campus, Harvard Has Stayed Quiet

Trump Signs Order Directing Investigations Into University Accreditors

Trump signed an executive order Wednesday directing the Department of Education to investigate and potentially strip recognition from accrediting agencies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, labeling them “discriminatory ideology.” The move targets bodies that accredit schools like Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School, intensifying the administration’s broader crackdown on DEI in higher education. The order empowers Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Attorney General Pam Bondi to review DEI-related accreditation criteria and represents a direct threat to institutions’ federal funding and academic autonomy.

Harvard Kennedy School Revokes Fellowship to Human Rights Activist, Saying Offer Was Premature

Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) revoked a fellowship offer to A. Kayum Ahmed, a Columbia professor and Human Rights Watch staffer, citing a procedural error — but Ahmed alleged it was retaliation for his pro-Palestine stance. The Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights initially extended the unpaid, non-resident fellowship without full approval, then rescinded it after review. This echoes the 2022 Kenneth Roth controversy, reigniting concerns over academic freedom and censorship at HKS. School officials deny outside influence, but the case surfaces amid broader scrutiny of Harvard’s handling of pro-Palestine voices.

Affinity Groups Face Silence From Harvard as Trump Targets Race-Based Graduation Celebrations

As the Trump administration intensifies attacks on Harvard’s diversity efforts, the status of this year’s affinity graduation celebrations remains uncertain, with no communication from the Office for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (OEDIB). While affinity celebrations — honoring graduates from Latinx, Black, Indigenous, APIDA, LGBTQ+, and other communities — have been long-standing traditions, student leaders report silence despite past outreach occurring in early April. With federal threats against DEI programs and a $2.2 billion funding freeze, students and alumni fear these culturally significant events may be at risk, though Harvard leadership continues to express public support for inclusion.

Op Eds: Why Harvard’s Lawsuit Matters — For All of Us

In his op-ed, Charles R. Nesson,  ’60 is the William F. Weld Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, argues that Harvard’s lawsuit against the Trump administration is a critical stand for academic freedom and institutional independence. Nesson contends that the federal $2.2 billion funding freeze is not legitimate civil rights enforcement but political coercion, driven by the administration’s desire to impose ideological control over universities. He warns that federal demands—such as firing DEI staff, restructuring governance, and enforcing viewpoint audits—threaten not just Harvard, but all research institutions. The case, he concludes, is a pivotal test of constitutional freedoms in higher education.

Op Eds: Harvard Barred Me From Graduating. This Week, They Gave Me Hope.

In her op-ed, Phoebe G. Barr '24 reflects on Harvard’s recent lawsuit against the Trump administration and expresses unexpected hope that the University is beginning to uphold principles of free expression and institutional integrity. Though previously barred from graduating for participating in a peaceful pro-Palestine protest, Barr acknowledges Harvard’s resistance to Trump’s extreme demands — including banning masks and dismantling DEI — as a crucial line of defense against authoritarianism. She calls on Harvard to now re-examine its own repressive actions and use this legal battle as a chance to recommit to academic freedom and genuine inclusivity.

Columns: The Endowment Should Be Taxed

Annushka Agarwal argues that Harvard’s endowment income should be taxed, proposing a modest 5 percent rate to reflect the University’s status as neither fully charitable nor wholly private. While Harvard contributes to the public good through scholarships, research, and open-access initiatives, its services remain largely exclusive, benefitting a small, elite demographic. Taxing endowment returns, she contends, would allow redistribution toward broader educational and social benefits. Agarwal warns, however, against politically motivated tax proposals designed to suppress academic freedom, emphasizing that taxation should support equity, not punishment.

Columns: Harvard’s Trash Problem Is Deeper Than That

Margot I. Cerbone critiques Harvard’s trash problem not just as a logistical failure but as a cultural one, arguing that students overlook small, solvable issues in pursuit of larger ambitions. She highlights the lack of adequate waste bins and students’ unwillingness to pick up litter, suggesting that this reflects a broader neglect of short-term, everyday responsibilities. Drawing on her West Virginia hometown’s civic pride, Cerbone urges peers to value immediate action — like picking up a coffee cup — as foundational to long-term impact. “Until then,” she concludes, “we can pick up some trash.”
