A team at Massachusetts General Hospital led by HMS physician-scientists has for the second time successfully transplanted a genetically edited pig kidney into a living person. The team performed the first surgery of its kind in the world in March 2024. Results of the latest procedure highlight the promise of xenotransplantation — the transplanting of modified animal organs into humans — to alleviate human organ shortages and save lives. The approach could also help reduce health disparities in organ failure and access to transplantation. “Xenotransplantation represents a turning point by eliminating the organ shortage as a barrier to transplantation,” says Leonardo Riella, HMS professor of surgery and medical director for kidney transplantation at Mass General. “It offers a solution far superior to dialysis.” The patient, 66-year-old New Hampshire resident Tim Andrews, is the fourth person in the world to receive a pig kidney.

Harvard and Dunhuang: 100 Years Later
Coming soon: The Harvard Plan Universities have become a battlefield in the American culture wars in a way that’s dramatic and new. In the past year, Congress subpoenaed and investigated the inner workings of private colleges for the first time; four ivy league presidents quit their jobs amid mounting pressure and many institutions rolled back their commitments to be welcoming places for all. Meanwhile, President-elect Trump campaigned to “reclaim” universities from the “Marxist maniacs and lunatics.” This series brings all of that into focus by examining the short, troubled tenure of Harvard’s 30th president, Claudine Gay. She started the job two days after the Supreme Court struck down Harvard’s program of race-based affirmative action. By the time Gay resigned, she had been tarred as a symbol of what’s wrong with diversity efforts.

Flyby: Harvard College Concentrations as Winter Coats

This humorous piece draws parallels between Harvard College concentrations and winter coats, suggesting that both reflect personal identity and social belonging. Computer Science majors opt for the efficient Patagonia Nano-Puffer, while Economics students sport the prestigious Canada Goose. English majors embrace vintage peacoats for their literary charm, and Environmental Science concentrators choose sustainable puffers. Government students balance practicality with presence in an overcoat and scarf, while Psychology majors favor a comforting North Face fleece. Finally, Philosophy students don cape coats, embodying existential inquiry. Ultimately, both coats and concentrations showcase individual values and aspirations.

Flyby: Expectations vs. Reality: Spring Semester

This lighthearted piece explores the gap between expectations and reality in Harvard’s spring semester. Students return with high hopes—believing workloads will be manageable, time will be better organized, and social lives will flourish. However, reality quickly sets in: coursework feels even more intense, schedules are chaotic, and brutal winter weather makes leaving the dorm a challenge. Social plans often take a backseat to overwhelming academic demands. Despite the rough start, the author reminds readers that there’s still time for a comeback—or at least comfort in shared struggles.

Wildfire safety: 4 ways to protect yourself after a fire

Even after a wildfire is extinguished, airborne particles can still pose health risks. Joe Allen of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health offers four key safety measures: use high-efficiency filters (MERV 13+ for central air or HEPA for purifiers), minimize indoor dust by cleaning with damp cloths and HEPA vacuums, monitor air quality with sensors, and wear protective masks—preferably a P100 with a multi-gas cartridge—when near burn areas. These steps help reduce exposure and safeguard health during post-fire recovery.

When is perfectionism unhealthy? - The lie that taints perfectionism

Ellen Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist, explores the dark side of perfectionism in her book How to Be Enough. While conscientiousness can drive success, perfectionism turns unhealthy when self-worth becomes tied to achievement, leading to harsh self-criticism, anxiety, and isolation. Hendriksen explains how rigid standards create cycles of avoidance, procrastination, and social disconnection. To counteract this, she suggests changing how we relate to self-criticism, focusing on values over rigid rules, and making small shifts—such as being just 2 percent kinder to ourselves—to foster self-acceptance and break perfectionistic patterns.

Extreme heat may raise risk of hospitalization for adults with Alzheimer’s

A Harvard study published in JAMA Internal Medicine links extreme heat exposure to increased hospitalization risks for adults with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD). Analyzing 3.3 million Medicare claims from 2000-2018, researchers found each extreme heat day could lead to 5,360 additional ADRD-related hospitalizations across the U.S. Patients may struggle to recognize or respond to heat symptoms, worsening their vulnerability. The study also highlights racial disparities, citing systemic factors like housing inequality and healthcare access. Researchers urge policymakers to address these risks as climate change intensifies.
