Garber Promises To ‘Engage’ With Federal Antisemitism Task Force After Funding Threats

In response to the Trump administration's launch of a federal antisemitism task force investigation and a review of more than $8 billion in federal funding, Harvard President Alan Garber pledged to cooperate with federal officials and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to combating antisemitism. While expressing concern that cuts could “halt life-saving research,” Garber acknowledged antisemitism on campus and Harvard’s shortcomings, signaling willingness to improve policies without compromising academic freedom. His message echoed former Columbia President Katrina Armstrong’s conciliatory approach before Columbia conceded to federal demands. Harvard has also enacted policy changes post–Oct. 7, including stricter protest rules and a new definition of antisemitism.

Trump Administration To Review Billions in Federal Funding to Harvard

The Trump administration has launched a sweeping review of over $8 billion in federal funding to Harvard, escalating pressure over the University’s handling of antisemitism and pro-Palestine protests. Led by the Departments of Education, HHS, and the GSA, the investigation mirrors an earlier probe into Columbia, which resulted in $400 million in funding cuts and leadership upheaval. While no specific demands were issued yet, the task force may issue stop-work orders and request additional contract disclosures. Facing potential academic freedom concerns, over 600 Harvard faculty have urged the University not to comply with “unlawful demands.”

17 Senators Call for Release of HMS Researcher Kseniia Petrova

Seventeen U.S. senators, including Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, are demanding the release of Harvard Medical School researcher Kseniia Petrova, who is being held in an ICE facility after allegedly failing to declare frog embryos at Boston Logan Airport. Though the infraction typically results in a fine, Petrova’s J-1 visa was revoked, and she now faces possible deportation to Russia, where she previously protested Putin’s war in Ukraine. Senators warn she could face persecution or death and urge her release before her May 7 asylum hearing.

Fifteen Questions: Alison Frank Johnson on the Power of Stories, Lacrosse, and Why She Speaks Up

Alison Frank Johnson, Professor of History and Chair of the Germanic Languages and Literatures Department at Harvard, reflects on the power of obscure historical stories to foster empathy and critical thinking. She discusses her current research on post-war Austria and Germany, investigating how anti-Semitic legends persisted for centuries and were only recently confronted. Johnson emphasizes the value of evidence-based debate, the importance of teaching controversial topics with nuance, and the role of students in challenging norms. A passionate educator, avid reader, and unexpected lacrosse fan, she believes in speaking up — even when it draws criticism — to defend academic freedom and marginalized voices.

Columns: I Was Hillel President. Trump Claims His Funding Cuts Help Jews — He’s Wrong.

Former Harvard Hillel President Jacob M. Miller ’25 argues that Trump’s federal funding cuts to Harvard — purportedly to fight antisemitism — are misguided and harmful. Drawing from his firsthand experiences combating anti-Jewish hate on campus, Miller emphasizes that antisemitism is a cultural issue, not easily addressed through administrative action or blanket funding rollbacks. He warns that such cuts would undermine critical research, destabilize academia, and reflect a broader effort to weaken higher education rather than protect Jewish students. He criticizes the politicization of Jewish concerns, calling instead for efforts to build up universities, not dismantle them.

Columns: Trump Is Suppressing Campus Speech. Harvard’s Response Is Shameful.

Layla L. Hijjawi ’27 criticizes the Trump administration for its crackdown on campus speech, particularly targeting pro-Palestinian expression and international students, which she argues undermines free speech and constitutional rights. She condemns Harvard’s weak response, citing inaction, lack of transparency, and failure to call these actions what they are: attacks on academic freedom. Hijjawi urges Harvard to defend its students, warning that acquiescence only invites further repression, as seen at Columbia University. She calls on the University to resist right-wing pressure and uphold its core values in the face of politically motivated censorship.

Harvard at risk of losing $9 billion in federal funds as US launches review

The Trump administration is reviewing nearly $9 billion in federal funding to Harvard University as part of its campaign against what it claims is campus antisemitism. This includes $255 million in contracts and $8.7 billion in multi-year grants. The move follows similar action against Columbia University and is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to pressure universities on speech, protest, and culture war issues. While Harvard President Alan Garber acknowledged the presence of antisemitism and pledged continued reforms, he warned that cutting funds would threaten life-saving research and academic freedom.

Trump Administration Will Review Billions in Funding for Harvard

The Trump administration has launched a review of approximately $9 billion in federal funding to Harvard University, citing concerns over the university’s handling of campus antisemitism. This includes $256 million in contracts and $8.7 billion in multiyear grant commitments, some of which support major affiliated hospitals like Mass General Brigham and Dana-Farber. Harvard President Alan Garber acknowledged the presence of antisemitism and pledged cooperation with the federal task force but warned the funding cut could “halt life-saving research.” The move mirrors earlier punitive actions against Columbia and UPenn, raising serious concerns about academic freedom, First Amendment rights, and the weaponization of federal funds.
