‘Mom, I Did It, I Did It’: Class of 2029 Reacts to Harvard Acceptance

By Cassidy M. Cheng and Claire T. Grumbache

Harvard College’s Class of 2029 was met with shock, joy, and tears last Thursday as Regular Decision admits received their offers, joining early admits from December. Students like Ethan Comer fell out of chairs, Valeria Mendez gave a heartfelt thanks to her family, and September Jiang celebrated her acceptance just moments after a rejection from Princeton. Harvard withheld applicant and acceptance data this year for the first time in decades, promising a fall release. Despite initial doubts, many students described their acceptance as surreal, filled with confetti, screaming, and celebration, with excitement building toward April’s Visitas event.

September Jiang, from Pompano Beach, Florida, was initially doubtful about her Harvard chances, especially after receiving a Princeton rejection moments earlier, but her acceptance brought "a lot of screaming and excitement."

Jenny Min, from Ellicott City, Maryland, looks forward to exploring Harvard’s performing arts scene, particularly the Din and Tonics.

Alice Chen, from Mastic, NY, admitted via Restricted Early Action, described her reaction as screaming, jumping, and crying, celebrating with friends before calling her mom: “Mom, I did it, I did it.”

作者:  Cassidy M. Cheng 和 Claire T. Grumbache

Harvard welcomed its class of 2029 last week, to the surprise and excitement of many high school seniors around the world.

Phi Beta Kappa Elects Junior 24 from Harvard Class of 2026

By Rauf Nawaz and Adrian Z. Yin

Twenty-four juniors from Harvard’s Class of 2026 were elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society on Friday, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and intellectual breadth. Students like Lea Wang, Max Fan, and Linda Wnetrzewska expressed surprise and gratitude, with several highlighting the significance of the award as international students. Honorees praised the opportunity to explore diverse fields through Harvard’s liberal arts curriculum and emphasized the role of community and mentorship in their success. The recognition, often unexpected, offered a moment of personal reflection and quiet celebration.

When Lea Wang ’26 first saw her Phi Beta Kappa induction email, she thought it might be a scam, unsure whether it was a ploy to collect induction dues. A junior in Kirkland House studying Applied Mathematics and Social Studies, Wang wasn’t alone in her disbelief. Max Fan ’26, an English and pure mathematics concentrator also in Kirkland, casually found the news between a Spirit Airlines and a Cultural Rhythms email. Despite the surprise, Wang said she was “really glad” to share the moment with friends who also received the honor.

作者:  Rauf Nawaz 和 Adrian Z. Yin

Dean of Students Addresses Immigration Fears in College-wide Email

Harvard College Dean of Students Thomas G. Dunne sent a College-wide email Sunday addressing immigration enforcement concerns after reports that the Trump administration revoked student visas of pro-Palestine international students. Dunne assured students the University is monitoring the situation and pointed to resources like the Harvard International Office (HIO), a "know your rights" session, and the Harvard Representation Initiative for legal support. Unlike Yale and Columbia, Dunne did not provide specific ICE interaction guidance, but reaffirmed HUPD should be contacted if law enforcement seeks nonpublic access.

FAS Committee Recommends Overhauled Disciplinary Appeals Process, More Faculty on Ad Board

A Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) committee at Harvard recommended a major overhaul of the disciplinary appeals process and called for increased ladder faculty participation on the Administrative Board (Ad Board), the undergraduate misconduct body. The proposal limits appeals to cases involving withdrawal, creates a new pool of experienced faculty for appeals and Ad Board service, and encourages mandatory training for board members and advisers. While the committee did not endorse student membership on the Ad Board, it acknowledged the Harvard Undergraduate Association’s advocacy. Dean Hopi Hoekstra endorsed the changes, which stem from controversy over sanctions on pro-Palestine protesters.

HMS Researchers Find Open-Source AI Tool As Accurate As GPT-4 In Diagnosing Patient Case Studies

Harvard Medical School researchers found that an open-source AI model, Llama 3.1 405B, matched or outperformed GPT-4 in diagnosing complex patient cases — a first in clinical AI research. Unlike proprietary models, Llama 3.1 can be run within hospital networks, enabling secure use of patient data without privacy risks. Lead author Thomas Buckley emphasized the potential for custom model development, while Professor Arjun Manrai hailed the breakthrough as “remarkable”, noting it allows AI to be used in real-world clinical settings. Still, physician oversight remains critical to ensure diagnostic accuracy and trust.

Op Eds: Students Blacklisted, Students Arrested: All Voices of Reason, Speak Up Now

In a powerful op-ed, Professor Mathias Risse condemns the recent arrest and deportation threats against Tufts Ph.D. student Rumeysa Ozturk, warning that U.S. immigration enforcement actions — cheered on by some pro-Israel activist groups — are creating an authoritarian climate where non-citizens fear political speech. Risse critiques the blacklisting of pro-Palestinian students, the government’s misuse of ICE, and Harvard’s silence, urging all voices of reason to defend free expression, due process, and human rights in the face of escalating suppression.

This Harvard-backed diet makes you more than twice as likely to be healthy at 75

A Harvard-backed study published in Nature Medicine found that individuals who closely followed the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) were 86% more likely to be healthy at 70 and over twice as likely to be disease-free at 75. Developed by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the AHEI emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, healthy fats, and moderate alcohol, while limiting red/processed meats, sugary drinks, and refined grains. The study, based on data from 105,000 participants over 30 years, highlights that plant-based, flexible diets support healthy aging, with the Planetary Health Diet Index ranking a close second.
