Trump’s Order to Shutter Education Department Ushers in Period of Uncertainty for Higher Education

By Annabel M. Yu

President Donald Trump’s executive order to shutter the U.S. Department of Education has sparked widespread concern among education experts, who warn it threatens essential services such as student loans, civil rights enforcement, and research funding. While the order cannot fully dissolve the department without congressional approval, it begins shifting programs—like student aid management to the Small Business Administration—despite that agency also facing layoffs. Critics say the move could reduce access to education for low-income students, compromise civil rights oversight, and disrupt education research, marking a dramatic and uncertain shift in federal education policy.

HMS Researchers Discover Key Protein in Activating Autoimmune Responses

By Nari Shin

Harvard Medical School researchers have identified Granzyme K as a key protein that activates autoimmune and inflammatory responses by mistakenly targeting the body’s own tissues. Their study, published in Nature, revealed that Granzyme K can trigger the complement system — a crucial immune defense mechanism — in a previously unknown way, marking the fourth known activation pathway. Experiments in mice showed that removing Granzyme K reduced inflammation and disease severity, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target. Unlike broader complement inhibitors, targeting Granzyme K may avoid compromising the immune system’s ability to fight infections.

Op Eds: Harvard Used To Care About Ukraine. It Shouldn’t Stop Now.

In a recent op-ed, Harvard students Jane S. Lichtman and Arjun S. Purohit argue that the University and its community must rekindle their commitment to Ukraine amid waning attention and U.S. aid cuts under the Trump administration. While Harvard initially showed strong support following Russia’s 2022 invasion, recent silence contrasts sharply with the war’s escalating global stakes. The authors urge students and faculty to reengage through awareness, advocacy, and renewed pressure on the University to distance itself from Russian-linked donors, asserting that the defense of democratic values remains essential to Harvard’s mission.

Columns: Harvard Could Learn a Thing or Two From Femininity

In her column, Harvard freshman Margot I. Cerbone argues that despite the growing number of women at Harvard, traditional feminine values like empathy, collaboration, and caregiving remain undervalued on campus. She critiques the masculine-driven culture of prestige and competition, which prioritizes power and high-paying careers over passion and impact. Highlighting careers like teaching and parenting as meaningful yet underappreciated, Cerbone calls for a cultural shift that embraces femininity — not as a gendered trait, but as a human one — to foster a healthier, more inclusive definition of success at Harvard and beyond.

Columns: An Open Letter to Campus Republicans

In her column, Harvard freshman Katie H. Martin challenges campus Republicans to elevate their political discourse by embracing respect and compassion in debate. Responding to frequent complaints about conservative marginalization, Martin argues that many right-wing voices lose credibility by platforming hateful rhetoric and failing to separate political beliefs from attacks on identity. She criticizes the Republican alignment with Trump-era extremism and calls on conservative students to reflect on the impact of their words. True intellectual vitality, she contends, requires self-awareness, empathy, and a commitment to discourse that respects others’ fundamental rights.

A 30-year Harvard-led study involving over 105,000 adults found that diets rich in plant-based whole foods and low in ultra-processed foods significantly increase the chances of healthy aging. Participants adhering to diets like the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), Mediterranean, DASH, and Planetary Health Diet were more likely to reach age 70 free from chronic disease and maintain physical, mental, and cognitive health. The study emphasizes that while there’s no universal diet, prioritizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats—and minimizing processed foods—supports both longevity and quality of life.
