Nate H. Cohen reviews the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra’s first concert of the semester, a powerful all-Soviet Era program held on March 8 at Sanders Theatre. Conducted by Federico Cortese, the orchestra opened with Ustvolskaya’s intense “Symphonic Poem No. 2”, followed by excerpts from Shostakovich’s “Suite on Verses of Michelangelo”, featuring vocalist Junhan Choi and harpist Olivia Lee. After intermission, the orchestra delivered a gripping performance of Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 11”, capturing its emotional and historical weight. Despite occasional imperfections, the ensemble’s technical precision, emotional range, and musical maturity stood out throughout the evening.

Nicole M. Hernandez Abud reflects on the Crimson Cellos’ “Concert in Candlelight” held on March 9 in Winthrop House’s Junior Common Room, where a cozy, candlelit setting fostered a rare intimacy between musicians and audience. Blending classical and contemporary works, the ensemble performed pieces from Vivaldi, Pachelbel, and Piazzolla, alongside modern hits by Taylor Swift, Gotye, and Coldplay. With visible chemistry and warmth, the musicians’ nuanced expressions and slight imperfections enhanced the emotional authenticity of the evening. The thoughtful repertoire, ambiance, and closeness created a nostalgic and unforgettable musical experience.

What are the odds of picking a perfect NCAA bracket?
Harvard statistician Kevin Rader explains that the odds of picking a perfect NCAA March Madness bracket are astronomically low—1 in 2⁶³, or quintillions—comparable to winning the Powerball twice in a row. While top seeds rarely lose early, reducing the randomness somewhat, unpredictable upsets still make perfection nearly impossible. No one has ever officially achieved a perfect bracket. To win an office pool, Rader advises picking favorites while choosing a few strategic upsets to stand out, but warns that beyond a point, it's almost a coin flip.

As Trump Slashes Federal Grants, the Harvard School of Public Health Has the Most To Lose
The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) is reeling from President Trump's sweeping cuts to federal research funding, suffering more than any other Harvard school due to its 59% reliance on such funds. At least a dozen grants have been terminated, forcing program closures, hiring freezes, and reductions in Ph.D. admissions. Particularly targeted are diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) research areas, including LGBTQ and racial health studies. Professor Brittany Charlton lost her entire NIH grant portfolio, threatening her LGBTQ Health Center. Despite calls for philanthropic support, faculty stress that federal funding remains irreplaceable.
World Bank President Ajay Banga Talks Jobs and Development at IOP Forum
By Anna Shao
At a Harvard Institute of Politics Forum, World Bank President Ajay Banga emphasized that job creation must be central to global development efforts. He highlighted the importance of local business growth, anti-corruption, infrastructure, and policy reforms in achieving sustainable economic progress and curbing migration. Banga warned that population growth in emerging markets is outpacing job opportunities, risking mass migration. He also addressed immigration challenges, calling for more empathy toward migrants. Stressing self-reliance, Banga said countries must take ownership of reforms, with institutions like the World Bank acting as catalysts, not sole drivers.

Natasha Bedingfield To Headline Yardfest 2025
By Darcy G Lin
Natasha Bedingfield, best known for 2000s hits like “Unwritten” and “Pocketful of Sunshine,” will headline Yardfest 2025, Harvard College’s annual spring concert, on April 6 in Tercentenary Theatre, the College Events Board confirmed. The event will also feature student bands Yardbops, Stryk9, and Big Tuesday as openers. Bedingfield’s music saw a resurgence with “Unwritten” charting again in 2024. Despite student hopes for bigger names, officials cite budget limits tied to the Student Activities Fee. Last year’s headliner, Tinashe, also faced mixed reactions due to similar funding constraints.

Op Eds: I’m Glad Harvard Expanded Aid. Now It’s Time To Increase Access.
In her op-ed, Ira Sharma ’28 applauds Harvard's expanded financial aid, but argues it's not enough — the University must also increase access by actively recruiting high-achieving students from low-income, geographically underrepresented communities. Despite aid efforts, elite “feeder schools” and wealthy recruited athletes remain overrepresented, while students from public schools and rural areas often lack the resources or encouragement to apply. Sharma calls for Harvard to partner more closely with under-resourced schools, making admissions and financial aid more accessible to students who would benefit most from a Harvard education.
Columns: Harvard Has To Make Up Its Mind About General Education
Henry F. Haidar ’28 critiques the current state of Harvard’s General Education (Gen Ed) program, noting widespread student disengagement and a lack of clarity in its purpose. While faculty recently proposed eliminating the pass/fail option for one Gen Ed course to boost seriousness, Haidar argues that deeper reform is needed. He highlights how the program’s attempt to balance rigor and flexibility leads to a muddled experience, with overly specialized courses, limited choices, and ineffective distribution requirements. He suggests Harvard must choose between adopting broader academic standards or embracing an open curriculum to restore educational purpose.
From Tchaikovsky to Tilson Thomas: A History of Classical Music at the BSO
Nina M. Jasanoff reviews a recent Boston Symphony Orchestra concert led by Teddy Abrams, featuring violinist Ray Chen in a stirring performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Chen’s expressive interpretation captured the piece’s emotional depth, particularly in the dynamic third movement. The orchestra complemented him skillfully, and Abrams’s relaxed conducting allowed for artistic freedom. After intermission, baritone Dashon Burton performed Michael Tilson Thomas’s “Whitman Songs”, which received mixed reception due to its unusual pairing of music and text. The concert concluded with a vibrant performance of Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances”, showcasing the orchestra’s rhythmic precision and energy.

Healthy eating in midlife linked to overall healthy aging
A new study led by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, along with collaborators in Copenhagen and Montreal, finds that following plant-based, minimally processed diets in midlife is strongly linked to healthy aging—reaching age 70 and beyond with preserved physical, cognitive, and mental health. Analyzing data from over 105,000 adults over 30 years, the study found the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) and Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) were especially effective. In contrast, diets high in ultra-processed foods lowered the likelihood of aging healthfully, reinforcing the role of nutrition in long-term well-being.
