Harvard and MIT Urban Planning Experts Weigh In on Proposed Zoning Overhaul
A Harvard-MIT panel of urban planning experts, including Maurice D. Cox, Jeff Levine, and P. Chris Zegras, discussed Cambridge's proposed upzoning legislation, emphasizing the importance of resident input but differing on when it should occur. Cox advocated bold, immediate action with iterative adjustments, while Zegras emphasized a deeper, community-led engagement process beforehand. Both highlighted the need for context-sensitive design and visual aids to help residents understand potential neighborhood changes. Economic investment beyond inclusionary zoning was deemed crucial for inclusive housing. Residents at a subsequent public hearing echoed calls for more engagement, though some urged swift action to avoid delays.
