Harvard and MIT professors highlighted the essential role of diverse perspectives in scientific breakthroughs, while economists emphasized the economic benefits of research investment. Trump Slashes $400 Million in Federal Funding for Columbia, Sending Shock Waves Across Higher Ed

The Trump administration has announced a $400 million cut in federal funding to Columbia University, citing its alleged failure to address antisemitism amid ongoing pro-Palestine protests. This unprecedented move signals a shift toward direct financial penalties against universities over their handling of campus activism. While Harvard has not yet faced similar cuts, it remains under scrutiny, with federal investigations and previous threats from Trump targeting its funding. The decision has sparked concerns across higher education, with critics warning of its potential long-term impact on academic institutions and research funding.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance pressured Zelensky over a proposed minerals-for-aid deal, which remained unsigned. Analysts described the exchange as a strategic win for Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising concerns about the U.S.'s commitment to supporting Ukraine. Experts warned that Trump’s confrontational diplomacy and disregard for alliances could further strain U.S.-Ukraine relations and embolden Russian aggression.

Americans used to move around a lot, chasing opportunity. No more.

Yoni Appelbaum’s excerpt from Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity explores how America’s once-dynamic culture of mobility has sharply declined over the past 50 years, with severe economic and social consequences. Historically, Americans moved frequently in search of opportunity, fueling economic growth, innovation, and social mobility. However, legal and political changes, including restrictive zoning laws and bureaucratic barriers, have stifled migration, making housing unaffordable in booming cities. As a result, entrepreneurship, job switching, and economic mobility have slowed, while social isolation and distrust have risen, leaving Americans increasingly "stuck" in place.

Good Person

By Kaitlyn Tsai

Kaitlyn Tsai’s deeply personal essay explores the relentless self-criticism and guilt that have shaped her life, leading to self-harm and an overwhelming sense of unworthiness. Despite years of treatment, she struggles with feeling inherently "bad," punishing herself for perceived failures and even blaming herself for past traumas. Her psychiatrist challenges this belief, emphasizing that she is a good person, yet she finds it difficult to accept. While her perfectionism has driven her academic success, she questions who she would be without it. Through moments of introspection, therapy, and spiritual reflection, she seeks to release guilt and find self-acceptance, though the journey remains ongoing.

Kaitlyn Tsai

Flyby: Love It/Hate It: March

By Shawn A. Boehmer and Victoria Chen

This humorous op-ed captures the dual nature of March at Harvard, where glimpses of spring bring hope but unpredictable weather, midterms, and Housing Day keep students on edge. The “Love It” perspective sees March as a fresh start, celebrating longer days, Pi Day, March Madness, and the much-needed spring break. The “Hate It” side brands March as chaotic and deceptive, citing erratic weather, academic stress, and even an unnecessary overlap in month names with May. Ultimately, March is a month of extremes—whether you love it or hate it, it’s bound to be a wild ride.

作者:  Shawn A. Boehmer 和 Victoria Chen

You went to the doctor and came out feeling worse

This interview with psychologist Alexandra Fuss explores the growing concern of “medical gaslighting,” particularly in cases where patients feel dismissed when doctors can’t diagnose their symptoms. Fuss argues that most instances should instead be called “medical invalidation,” as intent to deceive is usually absent. She highlights how physicians face increasing pressures—heavy caseloads, administrative burdens, and systemic constraints—that contribute to these harmful patient experiences. Rather than blaming individual doctors, she advocates for systemic changes to improve doctor-patient communication and prevent invalidation, emphasizing that acknowledgment and empathy can help repair trust in healthcare.
