President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have congratulated Muslims on the celebration of Maolud Nabiyy, the birthday of Prophet Mohammad. They called on Nigerians to support the current administration's efforts in overcoming the nation's challenges by remaining patriotic, patient, and offering prayers. Tinubu assured Nigerians that the country is approaching an important juncture, and the light is certainly bright at the end of the tunnel. Other eminent Nigerians, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, and former Senate Deputy President Ovie Omo-Agege urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of Prophet Mohammad. The Kebbi State government has declared a public holiday.

Independence Day: Fed Govt to honour Akinkunmi, 10 others

The Nigerian government has announced plans to honour the designer of the country’s national flag, the late Pa Taiwo Micheal Akinkunmi, and 10 other national heroes with citizenship and patriots awards ahead of the country’s 63rd Independence Day. Scheduled for 5 October 2023, the awards will recognise individuals who contributed to the lyrics, composition and symbols of the country, and are part of the National Orientation Agency’s efforts to promote civic education. Other awardees include Naval Rating Salaudeen Akano, who hoisted the Nigerian flag at midnight to symbolise independence from Britain in 1960, and the late Mrs. Felicia Adebola Adedoyin, who created the National Pledge. The NOA director-general believes the country needs more patriots to meet the challenging demands of its current period.

Nigeria fourth cheapest country to live, says report

According to a recent report, Nigeria has been ranked as the fourth cheapest country to live in the world. Pakistan was ranked number one while Egypt and India came second and third respectively. The cost of living covers basics like housing, groceries, taxes, and healthcare. Some countries have a very low cost of living, which can make them attractive destinations for ex-pats, retirees, and others interested in reducing their expenses. The report also provides a list of other cheap countries to live in, with countries such as Libya, Syria, Nepal, and Bangladesh rounding out the top 8. The United States, Canada, the UK, and other developed countries are among the most expensive places to live.

FG, IFAD distribute Agro inputs to 83 Nasarawa farmer groups

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, has distributed farming inputs to 83 farmer groups in Nasarawa State to boost their capacity and ensure food security during the rainy season. The inputs include irrigation pumps, solar-powered knapsack sprayers, tricycles, power tillers, rice steam parboilers, and garri processing equipment. The state coordinator of the FGN/IFAD Value Chain Development Programme emphasized that agriculture is seen as a business, and the program aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder rice and cassava farmers sustainably. The Commissioner of Agriculture and Water Resources commended the program and urged farmers to utilize the inputs to achieve the best results.

Sanwo-Olu restates commitment to quality education

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasized his administration’s commitment to providing high-quality education in the state. Speaking at the unveiling of the Ogombo Senior High School in the Eti-Osa East Local Government Area, which was donated by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), the governor praised the organization’s involvement in realizing the administration’s vision for education and technology. Sanwo-Olu noted that COWLSO had been a dependable partner with the state government in its efforts to improve education in Lagos. The COWLSO Chairperson, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, added that the Ogombo project was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools. The governor also stressed the importance of ensuring that education infrastructure is designed to meet the needs of physically challenged students, in line with global standards and his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S.+ policy thrust.

Abiodun unveils Iperu housing scheme

The government of Ogun State has announced plans to construct 200 units of two-bedroom expanded bungalows in the Gateway Aviation Village. The housing estate is likely to offer job opportunities for over 5,000 artisans. The construction has been divided into two phases, the first of which is expected to result in the completion of 100 units in six months. The development of the estate is aimed at creating a new city in the town, which will serve the entire Remo cluster and the state as a whole. The project's location is expected to be beneficial for institutions and people who will make use of the Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport.

Cross River vows to enforce national family planning guidelines

The Cross River state government in Nigeria has pledged its commitment to domesticating and implementing the National Family Planning Guidelines, becoming one of ten states to do so. The commitment to bridge the funding gap in the procurement of family planning commodities was made by the state commissioner for health, Henry Ayuk. Legislators were urged to include family planning procurement as part of their constituency projects. The state’s family planning coordinator highlighted that donor fatigue had led to a previous shortfall of supplies and distribution. The state government will now contribute to the national basket fund at the federal level to ensure adequate supplies are available.

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has launched a department of Diversity and Inclusion to "reinforce the institution's commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive campus". The move is said to be in line with the Federal Government's policy on diversity and inclusion. The department will work towards "promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on campus by addressing systemic barriers, fostering cultural understanding, and embracing differences, to create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty, and staff". YABATECH's Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, said the initiative aligned with the institution's ambition of academic excellence, social responsibility, and holistic development.

Group wants better funding for tobacco control

The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) has criticised the federal government’s budgetary allocation for tobacco control in the country, stating that the funding has been reduced by half from NGN9.4m ($22,829) in 2022 to NGN4.7m in 2023. NTCA chair, Akinbode Oluwafemi, says that this has hampered the country’s tobacco control efforts and threatened advances made to date. He called for tobacco control to be prioritised since tobacco is a significant contributor to non-communicable disease. Whilst President Bola Tinubu is expected to declare war on international drug trafficking at the upcoming meeting of Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, the NTCA is urging him to also prioritise tobacco control as part of the drive. Programme officer, Chibuike Nwokorie, has called for tobacco to be taken seriously, stating that the budget for tobacco control for 2023 is “laughable in a country of more than 200 million people” and calling for an adequate allocation of resources to control the industry.

Tinubu rescuing Nigeria through foreign investment drive – NW-APC

The APC North-west zone has applauded President Bola Tinubu for taking action that has helped to rescue Nigeria from collapse, while simultaneously attracting foreign investment into the country. The party has also welcomed the Kano state governorship election tribunal judgement, stating that it will support the decision as it progresses to upper courts. The North-west zone's chairman, Garba Datti Mohammed, expressed confidence that the upper court would overturn the Zamfara governorship tribunal ruling, which upheld the election of People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Governor Dauda Lawal. Mohamed praised Tinubu for his critical decisions and international meetings with heads of state, and expressed the zone's support for the president.

Sanwo-Olu’s aide gets kudos

Tayo Ayinde, the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State governor, has been praised by Tayo Sodeinde, the chairman of the state's APC UK, for fulfilling his pledge made during the 2023 electioneering campaign. Ayinde had promised to sponsor some Muslim and Christian members of the chapter and others to embark on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem annually. This was to gain support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and secure the re-election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Tinubu. The APC UK and other organizations have appreciated Ayinde's fulfillment of his promise.

Widening existing roads better than flyovers, group tells Adeleke

The Osun Masterminds, a civil society group in Osun state, has advised Governor Ademola Adeleke not to construct two flyovers in Osogbo, but instead use the funds to widen roads across the state. The group lamented the poor state of critical road infrastructure in the state and called on the governor to act swiftly. Although some major roads are under the supervision of the federal government, the group warned Abandoning the infrastructure would have negative implications for lives and property in the state. Responding to the group's position, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. Kolapo Alimi said the state government was open to counselling and advice.

Abia to boost state economy through tourism

The Abia State government in Nigeria plans to refurbish dilapidated Federal Government tourist centres in the state, with the aim of using them to boost the state's economy through tourism. The Senior Special Assistance to Governor Alex Otti notes that they will use the theme of the 2023 World Tourism Day, which emphasizes green investments and tourism and projects the state's rich tourist and cultural potential to the world, to promote the state as a safe destination for quality entertainment, leisure, and tourism. The government also aims to remedy the key challenges of the tourism sector in Abia such as dilapidated tourist sites, existing capacity gaps within the sector, and challenges of hospitality institutions within the state, to create a more robust and inclusive economy. The plan with tourism is expected to break down stereotypes, promote tolerance, and build bridges of understanding amongst the people.

Lagos to connect 10,000 youths to private jobs

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with private firms, plans to provide jobs for 10,000 youths to combat unemployment and reduce skilled professionals' emigration, known as the "Japa" syndrome. The state's Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, announced the initiative at the "One Day Lagos Job Fair," which aims to connect professionals with job opportunities. The program will include a six-month training for successful candidates within various disciplines and fields. Ajigbotafe stated that the initiative aimed to eliminate the Japa phenomenon by getting youths off the streets while reducing internet fraud, crime and the need for economic migration.

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) is aiming to fight brain drain and unemployment by prioritising human capital development in Nigeria. The group plans to push this agenda at the upcoming 29th summit (NES 29) in October, with the goal of reducing the emigration of skilled professionals and keeping the youth productive while minimising brain drain. The chairperson of NES 29's Central Organising Committee, Amina Maina, hopes the private and public sectors can work together to reduce unemployment and utilise Nigeria's best and brightest minds to improve the economic and living conditions of all citizens. The summit's theme will focus on "Pathways for Sustainable Economic Transformation and Inclusion."

Logistics firm Brij.ng is offering real-time package tracking for customers as part of its mission to upgrade delivery services in Nigeria. The one-rider, one-location firm also aims to leverage technology to guarantee the safety of packages from pick-up to drop-off. Brij.ng is compliant with industry regulations and provides insurance to mitigate any losses or challenges that might arise. Co-founder Tope Abimbola said the company only currently operates in Lagos, but could expand as demand increases. The company runs an 80/20 profit-sharing system with individual partners.

Lagos deploys technology to promote safety in schools

The Lagos State Government in Nigeria is looking to technology to implement its safety programme across schools. The Safe School Lagos Initiative is working with technology partners to offer a portal with resources regarding safety, internet safety and increased communication between schools and emergency services. The initiative has worked with police and other responders to ensure student safety, and developed clearance protocols for teachers. In addition, the Commission issued safety-compliance certificates to schools meeting requirements, trained 3000 students and 5000 teachers and installed safety signage at all tertiary institutions in the state.

Afro-fusion artist Asake attributes his decision to pursue music over dance to his financial aspirations. He states that while he loves dance and believes it is important to integrate it with music, he was uncertain if it could provide the level of financial success he aimed for. Asake mentions that both music and dance work together, but he would rather focus on singing due to his strong desire for financial achievement. However, he also mentions that if dance brought significant success, he would pursue both simultaneously to maximize earning potential. Asake admits that his love for dance informed his decision to study it in school and forge a career out of it, but financial aspirations ultimately led him to pursue a music career.

Foundation marks TFC director’s 10th memorial anniversary

The Bunmi Adedayo Foundation (BAF) marked the 10th memorial anniversary of the founder, Oluwabunmi Adedayo, who passed away in 2013. The Executive Director of BAF, Oluwakemi Odedeyi, described Adedayo as a disciplined philanthropist who was passionate about improving children’s well-being. The foundation’s purpose is to give back to society and empower teachers with the right pedagogy to develop the right curriculum for students. Fowoke Akinleye, COO of Tastee Fried Chicken, said that a foundation was established to honour Adedayo and foster his passion for giving to the needy after his demise. Adedayo’s widow, Yemisi Adedayo, wrote a tribute to her late husband, remembering him every day.
