President Bola Tinubu, while speaking at the 4th G20 Investment Summit in Berlin, Germany, assured international investors that Nigeria is a secure destination for their investments. He emphasized Nigeria's stable democracy since 1999 and ongoing economic reforms, highlighting it as a prime business destination. The president also acknowledged challenges but gave his commitment to providing a conducive environment for investment, while emphasizing opportunities in energy, digitalization, telecommunications, and agriculture.

‘China committed to Nigeria, Africa in education, others’

Chinese Consul-General, Ms Yan Yuqing, stated that China is committed to offering Africa and Nigeria educational exchanges, healthcare development, capacity building, and social-economic development. She added that Chinese modernization is common prosperity for all and that China not only makes the “cake” bigger but also shares it evenly. Ms Yan spoke at the 17th China-Africa lecture titled "Chinese modernization and the development of Africa." She highlighted the five characteristics of Chinese modernization which are a huge population, common prosperity, material and cultural advancement, harmony between humanity and nature, and peaceful development. The China-Africa institute, a national and international intellectual hub for African studies based in Beijing, is committed to providing intellectual support for China's cooperation with African countries and building a comprehensive strategic China-Africa partnership for the future and a stronger China-Africa community.

Western-style democracy not suitable for Africa — Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has argued that western liberal democracy is not suitable for Africa and is not working for the continent. Addressing a high-level consultation on the topic, Obasanjo said that western democracy should be moderated or re-examined because it is failing to facilitate good governance or progressive development. His main criticism is that it has not been home-grown, instead being based on minority views. Obasanjo urged the adoption of "Afro democracy" to ensure that African countries have greater involvement in “definition and design” of their systems of government. He called for examination of the “shortcomings” of western democracy and consideration of alternatives.

Foundation celebrates decade of impactful service to quality education

OneAfricanChild Foundation, a non-profit organisation promoting inclusive education for children, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The foundation focuses on providing education for low-income communities in Nigeria through citizenship and peace education. As part of its anniversary celebrations, OneAfricanChild Foundation has plans to unveil a creative learning centre in Kwara State, launch its Global Scholarship Program, and publish a report on 100 Stories of Impact to highlight the impact it has made over the years. Since 2013, OneAfricanChild has reached over 50,000 learners and boasts an 80% success rate among its learners. One of the foundation’s chief achievements is the establishment of the Graduate School support group, which has to-date secured over $850,000 in funding for scholarships and opportunities.

UTA moves to strengthen Nigeria, Libya cooperation

The United Towns Agency (UTA), an international humanitarian organisation affiliated with the United Nations, is working to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation between Nigeria and Libya. The UTA is leading a Libyan ministerial delegation on an economic-diplomatic visit to Nigeria to strengthen existing bilateral trade relations and meet with Nigerian officials, traditional rulers, and others. The UTA's Secretary General stated that the organisation is involved in a tripartite arrangement between UTA, the Libyan government, and the Italian government to end the suffering and deaths of Nigerian illegal migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe. As part of this arrangement, a Skill Acquisitions Programme is being introduced to train young Nigerian artisans who can ultimately be legally hired in Europe. The UTA has a presence in over 110 countries and is unique because it enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Danjuma donates $1.36m to UI College of Medicine

Former Defence Minister Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma has donated $1.36 million through the T.Y Danjuma Foundation to the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI) to build a hostel. The donation was in response to a request by the College, and the sum will be used to build Block D of the hostel, according to Provost Prof. Olayinka Omigbodun. The hostel is designed to house a total of 664 students and is critical to the re-accreditation of the College by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). The project is an alumni-driven initiative in partnership with the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association Worldwide (ICOMMA WW), and General Danjuma's donation is the largest so far made by an individual towards the project.

Sanwo-Olu appoints new CEO for AIDS control agency

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed Dr. Folakemi Animashaun as the new Chief Executive Officer of Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, effective from October 30, 2023. The appointment was made in recognition of her track record as a medical doctor, technocrat, and public servant, according to a statement signed by the Head of Service. Animashaun holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Essex, and an MBA from the University of Chichester Top-up London Graduate School, among other qualifications. Prior to her appointment, she served as the Administrator of Lagos State Emergency Command and Control Centre.

Speaking at a reception organised by the University of Ibadan Muslim Graduates’ Association (UIMGA) in his honour, Shettima paid tribute to the institution for shaping his worldview and instilling in him the values of public service. Nigeria committed to ECOWAS’ anti-money laundering, terror financing efforts – Fagbemi

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has stated that Nigeria is committed to supporting the anti-money laundering, terror financing and arm proliferation efforts of West African states. Speaking at the 27th Meeting of Ministerial Committee of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa, Fagbemi stressed the necessity for all members of the Economic Community of West African States to strengthen their fight against organised crime. He urged ECOWAS representatives to “become champions for truly effective national Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Terrorism Financing and Proliferation (AML/CFT/CPF) systems” and called on the region to improve the effectiveness of its frameworks. The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, echoed Fagbemi’s comments, also calling on the judiciary to prioritise cases involving money laundering and terrorist financing.

Obaseki, Oramah, others win Zik’s leadership award

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, and the President of the African Export-Import Bank, Professor Benedict Oramah, have been awarded the 2022 Zik Leadership Prize for Good Governance and Professional Leadership. Other winners include the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, former first lady of Kebbi State, Aisha Atiku Bagudu, and Group Chairman of SIFAX Group, Taiwo Afolabi, who were awarded prizes for Political Leadership, Humanitarian Leadership, and Entrepreneurial Leadership, respectively. The awards were presented at the 27th edition of The Zik Prize organised by the Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre, held in Lagos on Sunday night. In his acceptance speech, Obaseki pledged to work harder, and Oramah highlighted the importance of the principles, philosophy and values of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, after whom the award is named. The PPRAC established the Zik Prize in Leadership in 1994 to encourage and nurture leadership, service, and good governance.

JUST IN: Lagos digitises hotels, restaurants’ revenue collection

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has implemented the digitalisation of hotel occupancy and restaurant consumption tax revenue collection. The Eco Fiscal System (EFS) is an automated invoicing solution designed to simplify the collection of consumption taxes and increase revenue collection accuracy. Built with the hospitality sector in mind, the EFS offers real-time billing, collection monitoring, and the instant issuance of receipts with unique invoice numbers. Adapting the EFS will facilitate easy administration and reconciliation for hotel occupancy and restaurant consumption tax collections, reduce compliance costs, enhance businesses' operational efficiency and minimise compliance challenges. The Executive Chairman of LIRS reminded operators in the sector that failure to comply with the new system would attract penalties.

Starlink installation, maintenance capable of creating jobs -Minister

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has discussed with the Senior Director of Global Licensing and activation of SpaceX, Ryan Goodnight, the possibility of creating thousands of jobs in Nigeria through initiatives such as a certified installer/maintenance programme for Starlink and collaborating with hardware startups to produce repeater boxes locally. Tijani also shared that Nigeria is now Starlink’s biggest market in Africa, with the firm having 6,756 wireless Internet subscribers since its official launch in Nigeria in January 2023. The aim is to encourage every tech company to invest and deepen Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

West Africa’s largest ship berths in Lagos November 27

Port Terminal Multipurpose Limited in Lagos, Nigeria, has announced that it will receive the largest container-Roll-On-Roll-Off ship ever to visit the sub-region, owned by the Grimaldi Group, on 27 November. The MV Great Lagos, launched in April, has a length of 250 metres, a beam of 38 metres, and a weight of more than 45,000 tonnes. The ship can transport 4.7 kilometres of rolling freight, 2,500 car equivalent units and 2,000 20-foot equivalent units. The ship sets a new benchmark in the shipping industry and its compliance with the highest environmental standards aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and protect marine ecosystems. The terminal operator invested over $20m to receive the vessel.

Enugu says transport infrastructure to provide 11,000 jobs

The Enugu State Government in Nigeria has launched the first phase of its Transport Infrastructure Project. The scheme includes designed bus terminals, rail stations, transport interchanges and city gates across the state. It has been estimated that the project will create more than 11,000 semi-skilled and skilled jobs for state youths, and bring around NGN47.5bn ($124m) of investment into the state. State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, explained that the scheme was intended to modernise the state’s transportation system, with inspiration being drawn from successful transport schemes in Dubai and Singapore.

Unleashing the potential of Compressed Natural Gas

The Nigerian government is pushing for the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel source in response to the removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent rise in petrol prices. The adoption of CNG is a strategic shift towards cleaner and more cost-effective energy solutions, with numerous benefits including job creation and economic growth, improved public health, and reduced carbon emissions. Nigeria, which has extensive gas reserves exceeding 200 trillion cubic feet, predominantly lost through flaring, is deemed more of a gas-centric nation. The CNG initiative is anticipated to exert a substantial influence on the cost of fueling vehicles, mass transit, and industrial operations. The success of the initiative relies heavily on public awareness and acceptance, significant infrastructure development, and careful planning and collaboration. Countries worldwide, including Argentina, China, India, Iran, Italy, Pakistan and the United States, have embraced CNG.

Group lifts women entrepreneurs with investment funding

The Stand Against Female Marginalisation and Abuse (SAFEMA) has completed the second edition of its annual Miss Enterprise Africa (MEA) business pageant, with winners receiving millions in investment funding. The initiative, which targets young female entrepreneurs with scalable business ideas, offers a comprehensive training camp for the top 15 participants, who are then awarded up to N1million in investment funding along with other funding opportunities, a sponsored international trip, and consolation prizes. SAFEMA's convener, Ola Ajibola, noted that the initiative is designed to inspire culture-oriented young women with business acumen and a desire for success without compromising their morals.

‘Nigeria needs 3m tonnes of palm oil annually’

Experts have stated that Nigeria needs over three million tonnes of palm oil annually, however, the country only produces 1.4 million tonnes, which is not enough. Less than 800,000 hectares are under-cultivated, causing stakeholders to call for an increase in production. The National Initiative for Sustainable and Climate Oil Palm Smallholder (NI-SCOPS) program is being implemented by Solidaridad and IDH, funded by the Dutch government, to evoke economic and ecological resilience in the oil palm sector. The initiative will offer technical assistance to farming communities and workers, and support policymakers and authorities with improving natural resource management and restoration efforts. The government is being advised to understand the investment direction for the country in regional and global oil palm markets.

Abiodun woos foreign investors, says Ogun is investment friendly

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State in Nigeria has urged foreign investors to choose his state, particularly the Special Economic Processing Zone, as their preferred investment destination. Speaking at the Intra-African Trade Fair in Cairo, Abiodun said Ogun State has the necessary infrastructure, accessibility, access to power, and a youthful and educated population to be friendly to investors. He pointed out that companies such as Lafarge, Dangote, Nestle, Cadbury, May&Baker, Unilever, and Olam flours are already operating in the state. Abiodun said investors in the processing zone would also be able to take advantage of Nigeria’s vast agro produce, including rubber, cassava, cashew, cocoa, eggs, and cotton.

Emirates to resume flight operations to Nigeria soon

Emirates Airlines has announced that it will soon resume flight operations in Nigeria, after discussions with the country's government. The announcement was made after Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, met with officials from the airline during the Dubai Airshow. The airline also confirmed that Nigeria's Air Peace has been approved to fly directly to and from Dubai. Keyamo visited the airshow to identify ways to improve the aviation industry in Nigeria, and also had discussions with Airline Executive about establishing an MRO facility in the country. He also expressed interest in hosting the inaugural Nigerian Airshow in 2024, which would be the first of its kind in Africa.

Maritime stakeholders in Nigeria have called for experts to be included in the management of the newly-created Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in order to meet set targets. Speaking at the 14th Annual General Meeting and Lecture of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, the Chairman of the Benin River Port, Greg Ogbeifun, delivered the keynote address, titled, “Urgent regulatory reform in the maritime industry: Setting the agenda for the new administration”. He called for the managers of the new ministry to be prepared to take advice and make the right decisions.

NYSC asks corps members to explore cultural diversity

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria has urged youths to explore the benefits of the country's cultural diversity to develop themselves and society at large. The call was made during the 2023 Batch C Stream 1 Corps Members cultural carnival held in Anambra State. The event, organised by NYSC, aimed to showcase Nigerian cultural heritage, including music, traditional food, and systems of marriage, among others. The carnival also stimulates corps members' creativity and innovation while promoting local content and reducing prejudices against certain cultures. After the event, the winner was awarded the Fourth Platoon, followed by the Third Platoon and 10 Platoon. The Igwe of Umuawulu appreciated the government and NYSC for organising the event.

Burna Boy dedicated his award to Africa and all emerging African artists. The addition of an Afrobeats category in Billboard reflects the rise in popularity of the genre globally. Nigerian artist Rema also won an award for his song 'Calm Down,' which broke streaming and chart records. Rema thanked his fans and saw the award as a celebration of unity and Afrobeats' domination globally.
