The huge uncertainties unleashed by President Trump’s tariff war has made business planning almost impossible. To cope, managers need to take stock of the challenges ahead. They should also take steps to better ride out the gyrations and prepare for what may lie beyond them. These steps include: making sure your organization is prepared with country-of-origin documentation for your products; analyzing the feasibility of your manufacturing locations; and rethinking the trading blocs in which you do business.
Uncertain times abound, and as a result many of us are enduring a prolonged separation from our normal ways of being and doing. We are having liminal experiences, in other words—experiences that represent a break from the familiar but that don’t fully replace it. The protracted uncertainty that comes with living in liminal times can cause leaders and employees alike to feel unsettled or anxious, but the authors of this article from last November remind us that we have more agency during these times than we might realize.

Summers Says Harvard Gave Trump an Opportunity To Threaten University Over Antisemitism Response

Former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers criticized Harvard’s leadership for responding too slowly to campus antisemitism, saying that delay created an opening for the Trump administration’s threats to revoke $9 billion in federal funding. Speaking at a 1636 Forum alumni event, Summers backed recent disciplinary actions but warned they appeared politically reactive. He emphasized that reforms must be framed as Harvard-led, not Trump-driven, or they risk losing legitimacy. While he praised President Garber’s support for academic freedom, Summers said the Corporation failed in its duty to lead decisively and condemned the slow response of the University’s antisemitism task force.

Encouraging Harvard to Resist - Alumni and faculty letters urge Harvard to defend itself and academic freedom.

Amid growing pressure from the Trump administration, including threats to revoke $9 billion in federal funding, Harvard alumni and faculty have issued multiple open letters urging the University to defend academic freedom and resist political interference. The letters emphasize protecting free speech, due process, and university self-governance, while condemning antisemitism and warning against its use as a political pretext. Signatories, including law professors and civil rights leaders, stress that recent federal actions represent an unprecedented threat to higher education’s independence and the rule of law.

Amid Freeze, Harvard Will Continue Hiring Undergraduate Course Assistants

Despite a University-wide hiring freeze, Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences will continue hiring undergraduate course assistants (CAs) for large, intro-level courses like Economics 10 and CS50 in fall 2025. Professors say the freeze primarily targets external faculty and staff hires, not student academic positions. However, non-academic student jobs — such as in libraries or cafes — may be impacted, with hires now evaluated case-by-case. The freeze comes amid looming $8B federal funding threats tied to the Trump administration's demands, including cuts to DEI programs and compliance with federal protest restrictions.

Harvard's faculty senate planning body is exploring the idea of adding a faculty representative to the Harvard Corporation, the University's top governing board, as part of broader efforts to increase faculty voice in governance. In its first progress report, the group outlined ongoing research, including meetings with faculty senates at peer institutions like Stanford, Duke, and UChicago, and plans to draft bylaws by June. Led by Danielle Allen and Timothy McCarthy, the group is weighing options between an advisory vs. legislative role and alternative governance models amid mounting faculty calls for influence during the Trump administration's crackdown on higher ed.

Harvard Medical School Launches Open Inquiry Working Group

Harvard Medical School has launched a working group on open inquiry and free expression, announced by Dean George Q. Daley ’82. The 14-member group, chaired by former HMS Dean Jeffrey S. Flier, aims to protect academic freedom and dialogue, even on controversial topics. This comes amid growing scrutiny over speech on the Israel-Palestine conflict and recent censorship allegations at HMS. Flier, a critic of Harvard’s DEI policies and an advocate for viewpoint diversity, will lead the group, which reflects broader University efforts to uphold free speech in a polarized climate.

‘Inconsistent with Basic Economics’: Harvard Economics Baffled by Trump’s Tariff Policy

Harvard economists sharply criticized Trump’s sweeping tariff policy, calling it “economic malpractice” and a historic self-inflicted supply shock likely to push the U.S. into recession. Former Harvard president Larry Summers labeled it the worst economic mistake since WWII, while professors Mankiw, Furman, Antràs, and Rogoff dismissed Trump's zero-sum views on trade as inconsistent with basic economics. Tariffs on China remain at 125%, despite global backlash. The economists warned of global recession risks, U.S. credibility loss, and deviation from conventional economic norms.

Harvard Researchers Develop AI-Driven Framework To Study Social Interactions, A Step Forward for Autism Research

Harvard researchers, led by Bence Ölveczky and Ugne Klibaite, have developed an AI-driven framework to precisely track rat social interactions, marking a breakthrough in studying autism-related behaviors. Using machine learning, the system converts 2D video into 3D pose estimations for multiple animals, replacing time-consuming manual annotation. The study reveals wide variation in behavior among genetically modified rats lacking autism-associated genes, supporting their value as models. While cautioning against overinterpreting animal models, the researchers emphasized the broad potential of this tool to study movement and neurological disorders.

Columns: Putting Academics First Starts With All of Us

In her column, Kelli D. Higgins ’28 argues that while student leadership is celebrated at Harvard, it often overshadows academics, the true purpose of college. Driven by the pressure to stand out in a competitive environment, students may overload on extracurriculars and treat coursework as secondary. Higgins calls for a culture shift that re-centers academic growth, emphasizing that Harvard’s intellectual resources — not just leadership roles — are what truly prepare students for long-term success. Balance, she argues, is key to making the most of a Harvard education.

Op Eds: Where Did All the Radicals Go?

In her op-ed, Sylvia A. Langer ’28 laments the commercialization of Harvard Square, arguing that the rise of chains and loss of local coffeehouses has eroded community spaces crucial for political discourse and activism. Drawing from history, she emphasizes that such "third places" once served as hubs for radical thought and grassroots organizing. With increasing crackdowns on campus protest and growing national instability, she urges students to reconnect with Cambridge residents and reignite collective action — just as past generations did.

Flyby Matchmaker Part 2: “It Was Quite Basic”

In the second installment of Flyby Matchmaker, seniors Stephany Gutiérrez and Jorge Márquez, both Government concentrators, were serendipitously paired for a Berryline blind date, only to realize they already knew each other. Despite the rainy weather and shared post-grad job hunt woes, the evening was lighthearted with plenty of laughs and frozen yogurt. While no sparks flew, the date rekindled a friendly connection. Outcome: friendship, not romance — but with free froyo, nobody left disappointed.

Flyby Matchmaker
