More than 300 researchers and educators gathered in downtown Boston to protest President Donald Trump’s proposed cuts to federal research funding, which would significantly reduce NIH support for Harvard. The rally, joined by Harvard academic groups, criticized the cuts for threatening scientific research, medical advancements, and diversity initiatives. Speakers condemned the policy as politically motivated, with some linking it to broader attacks on higher education. Although a federal judge temporarily blocked the order, researchers remain concerned about funding stability and its impact on salaries, equipment, and ongoing projects.

Should I worry about dementia risk from antihistamines?

High levels of visceral fat may predict Alzheimer's

A study presented at the 2024 Radiological Society of North America meeting suggests that high levels of visceral fat, which surrounds abdominal organs, may be linked to increased amounts of amyloid plaques and tau tangles — proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease. The research, involving 80 healthy individuals with an average age of nearly 50, found that visceral fat, but not subcutaneous fat, correlated with these abnormal brain proteins. Those with excess visceral fat also showed signs of insulin resistance and lower HDL cholesterol. The study proposes that reducing visceral fat through lifestyle changes may help lower Alzheimer's risk before symptoms appear.

Even small amounts of extra exercise could lower blood pressure

A study published in Circulation on Nov. 6, 2024, found that even small amounts of additional vigorous exercise, like stair climbing or uphill walking, could lower blood pressure. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 15,000 participants and found that just five extra minutes of vigorous activity daily reduced systolic blood pressure by 0.68 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 0.54 mm Hg. Replacing 20 to 27 minutes of other activities with vigorous exercise could improve systolic blood pressure by 2 mm Hg, potentially reducing the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Brief bursts of vigorous activity linked to lower heart risks

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on Dec. 28, 2024, found that brief bursts of vigorous activity, such as running or climbing stairs, are linked to lower heart disease risks in women who don't regularly exercise. Researchers analyzed data from over 22,000 participants (average age 60), and found that women who averaged 3.4 minutes of vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity (VILPA) per day were nearly half as likely to have heart attacks or serious heart issues. VILPA showed less benefit for men, suggesting more research is needed to understand its impact on heart health.

More water may equate to more health benefits

A study published in JAMA Network Open on Nov. 25, 2024, found that drinking six to eight cups of water daily can offer a range of health benefits, including preventing kidney stones, aiding in weight loss, and potentially reducing the risk of migraines, UTIs, and even helping manage conditions like diabetes and low blood pressure. The analysis reviewed 18 randomized clinical trials and showed the most significant benefits for kidney stone prevention and weight loss, with six cups linked to weight loss and eight cups lowering kidney stone recurrence.

No cognitive effects seen after years of very low LDL cholesterol

A study published in NEJM Evidence in January 2025 found that extremely low LDL cholesterol levels, achieved through aggressive treatment with evolocumab (Repatha) and statins, did not lead to cognitive impairment. The study followed 473 participants from an earlier trial for a median of 5.1 years, with cognitive tests showing no differences in function between those taking evolocumab plus statins and those on statins alone. LDL cholesterol levels in the study ranged from 21 to 55 mg/dL, well below the typical target of less than 70 mg/dL for heart disease patients.

More evidence that plant-based diets might ward off heart problems

A Harvard study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in December 2024 found that increasing the proportion of plant-based protein in the diet can significantly lower the risk of heart and blood vessel problems. Researchers followed over 200,000 people for 30 years and found that those with the highest ratio of plant-to-animal protein had a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 27% lower risk of coronary artery disease. Replacing red and processed meats with plant-based sources like beans, lentils, and nuts also reduced stroke risks.

Can dark chocolate help you avoid diabetes?

A study published in The BMJ on Dec. 7, 2024, found that eating dark chocolate may help reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Researchers followed 112,000 middle-aged individuals for over 30 years and discovered that those who ate at least five ounces of dark chocolate weekly had a 21% lower risk of diabetes compared to those who rarely ate chocolate. Unlike milk chocolate, which was linked to weight gain and higher diabetes risk, dark chocolate’s flavanols—plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—might counterbalance its sugar and fat content, though further research is needed.

Daily dose of dark chocolate linked to lower diabetes risk

This study suggests that regularly eating dark chocolate—about an ounce a day—may be linked to a lower risk of developing diabetes. Researchers analyzed data from 192,000 people over 30 years and found that those who consumed at least five ounces of dark chocolate weekly had a 21% lower diabetes risk than non-consumers. Milk chocolate, however, provided no such benefit and was associated with weight gain. While observational studies can’t prove causation, the flavonoids in dark chocolate may help regulate blood sugar. The findings were published in The BMJ on Dec. 7, 2024.
