Key to healing riven communities? Getting people together.

This article profiles two campus religious leaders, Rabbi Getzel Davis and Imam Khalil Abdur-Rashid, who have worked to heal divisions on Harvard's campus exacerbated by the Israel-Hamas conflict. Following the October 7 terror attacks, both leaders focused on mending relationships between their Muslim and Jewish communities, emphasizing personal connections as the foundation for reconciliation. Though efforts at joint events have struggled due to emotional trauma, signs of progress include interfaith vigils and dialogues. The chaplains stress that understanding and respecting differences is vital to fostering community in an increasingly diverse world.

A Boston Municipal Court judge dismissed hate crime charges against Harvard graduate students Elom Tettey-Tamaklo and Ibrahim I. Bharmal, who were charged for their involvement in a pro-Palestine 'die-in' protest at Harvard Business School. However, both still face misdemeanor assault and battery charges. The case, delayed for months, stems from an October 2023 incident where they allegedly obstructed a student filming the protest. Harvard Prohibits Use of AI Assistants in Virtual Meetings

By Xinni (Sunshine) Chen and Danielle J. Im

Harvard has banned the use of AI meeting assistants that record and transcribe virtual meetings, citing legal, data security, and academic freedom concerns. The ban does not apply to AI tools under enterprise agreements, and Harvard is piloting Zoom AI Companion. The policy follows faculty recommendations to protect open discussion and maintain privacy. While some see AI assistants as intrusive, others believe the change has little impact. Harvard advises reviewing AI-generated summaries for accuracy and offers accommodations for those needing AI-assisted note-taking.

Harvard Submits Declaration Alongside Lawsuit by 13 Colleges Over NIH Order, Calls Funding Caps ‘Disastrous’

Harvard University submitted a declaration opposing the Trump administration’s order to cap NIH funding for indirect research costs, calling the cuts “disastrous.” While not joining a lawsuit filed by 13 universities, Harvard estimated it would lose $107 million annually, leading to staff reductions and stalled research. A federal judge temporarily blocked the order in 22 states. The NIH sought to limit overhead reimbursements, a move Harvard says threatens national research infrastructure. Trump defended the cuts, questioning why Harvard, with its large endowment, receives federal funds.

Harvard University Dining Services Ends New ‘Pub Night’ Menu After Student Complaints

By Katie B. Tian

Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) scrapped its new “Pub Night” weekend menu—featuring burgers, pizza, and chicken tenders—after student complaints about its lack of nutritious options. While HUDS aimed to keep students on campus and save them money, many criticized the menu as “junk food” and inadequate for those with dietary restrictions. Following backlash, HUDS announced an immediate return to the previous menu format, including traditional entrees and vegetables. In response to student requests, they will also reinstate the popular Nashville hot chicken sandwich on Fridays.

Columns: Harvard Has an Optimization Epidemic

A Harvard student argues that the campus suffers from an “optimization epidemic,” where the relentless pursuit of efficiency fuels burnout and detachment. From multitasking in lectures to overanalyzing leisure time, students prioritize productivity at all costs. Even social interactions are often optimized, like scheduling quick meals with friends to maximize efficiency. While optimization promises success, it comes at the cost of deep learning, genuine connection, and relaxation. The author urges students to resist the urge to constantly “do” and embrace moments of unstructured enjoyment.

Flyby: Reasons Why You Wore Your Harvard Sweatshirt to the Airport

A humorous take on why Harvard students wear their school sweatshirts at the airport, this article breaks down the motivations behind the choice. Whether it’s impressing a fleeting airport crush, subtly networking with wealthy alumni, making use of an overabundance of Harvard merch, or saving money on an Uber, there’s always a strategic reason. Of course, some just enjoy the attention—though most passersby probably assume the sweatshirt came from a random gift shop.
