The U.S Housing Crisis Housing affordability in the United States has become a major issue, especially in high-demand areas where the supply of homes falls far short of the need. But much of the resistance to building more housing stems from misunderstandings and deeply rooted concerns about how increased supply impacts prices, neighborhoods, and communities. Jason Furman, Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy, outlines what research can tell us about the impacts of building more housing and it's effects on affordability and displacement.
Humanity Meets AI Symposium: Framing the AI Conversation How might AI influence our understanding of humanity, morality, and meaning-making? How will religious traditions and communities adapt to or shape the ethical frameworks guiding AI development? In what ways can religious perspectives contribute to the creation of a more equitable society amid the disruptions AI will bring to labor, governance, and social structures? Religion and Public Life hosted a symposium that explored the profound ways in which artificial intelligence is reshaping human society, with a particular emphasis on the role of religion, the transformation of societal structures and capitalism, and strategies to reduce inequities as society responds to the sweeping changes brought about by AI. The symposium equipped our audience with the tools and frameworks to critically engage with the ethical, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of this transformation. In an age increasingly influenced by AI, this symposium helped identify practical opportunities to shape a more humane and just society.

How to read like a translator

Damion Searls, an acclaimed translator working in multiple languages, discussed his philosophy of translation at Harvard, emphasizing that translation is an interpretative reading experience rather than a direct word-for-word process. He explained that translators engage deeply with language structure, preserving an author’s stylistic choices while ensuring the text resonates naturally in English. Drawing from philosophy, he likened translation to recognizing objects—just as we instinctively identify a chair, translators instinctively engage with language. Searls highlighted the balance between linguistic accuracy and readability, stressing the importance of capturing meaning rather than rigidly adhering to the original wording.

Harvard boosts free-tuition offer, matching other Ivy-Plus schools in 'affordability arms race,' expert says

Harvard University announced it will offer free tuition to undergraduates from families earning $200,000 or less, joining other elite institutions in expanding financial aid. This move, part of an "affordability arms race" among Ivy Plus schools, follows similar initiatives from MIT, UPenn, and Princeton. Harvard will also cover full costs—including housing and travel—for students from families earning under $100,000. While the initiative aims to reduce student debt and improve accessibility, some students may still face additional costs. Experts see this as a strategic investment in socioeconomic diversity, despite financial pressures on universities.
