David Liu, a molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, has won the 2025 Breakthrough Prize for inventing two cutting-edge gene editing tools: base editing and prime editing. Base editing corrects single DNA-letter mutations and is already used in clinical trials, while prime editing can rewrite entire DNA segments—like a “find and replace” function. These tools hold the potential to cure genetic diseases such as leukemia, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell. Liu warns, however, that U.S. science funding cuts threaten future progress, likening them to “burning your seed corn.”
