2 Years After Affirmative Action Ruling, Harvard Admits Class of 2029 Without Releasing Data

By Cassidy M. Cheng and Claire T. Grumbacher

For the first time in nearly 70 years, Harvard College admitted the Class of 2029 without releasing key admissions data, including acceptance rate, applicant numbers, and demographics. Citing the Supreme Court’s 2023 affirmative action ruling, Harvard said it would withhold statistics until required by the Department of Education this fall. Experts suggest the move aims to avoid scrutiny amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on race-conscious admissions, including threats to cut federal funding. The decision delays public insight into how Harvard’s admissions may have changed post–affirmative action ban.

Claire T. Grumbacher

Teaching Israel/Palestine at Harvard - Course probes the modern history of the Holy Land.

Harvard history professor Derek Penslar is offering the course “One Land, Two Peoples: The Modern History of Israel/Palestine” amid heightened tensions following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. With around 50 students, the class promotes nuanced, civil dialogue grounded in historical context. Penslar addresses complex Israeli-Arab dynamics from 1948 to the present, incorporating updated materials and fostering respectful disagreement through tools like the Chatham House Rule and weekly discussion dinners. Penslar emphasizes embracing complexity over polarization, recognizing both Jewish and Palestinian national aspirations as historically grounded and legitimate.

Russian HMS Researcher Detained at Louisiana ICE Facility After Visa Revocation

Harvard Medical School researcher Kseniia Petrova, a Russian citizen, is currently detained at a Louisiana ICE facility after her U.S. visa was revoked for failing to declare frog embryos at customs. Petrova, who previously protested Putin’s war in Ukraine, now faces deportation but has filed two legal petitions—a habeas corpus challenge against expedited removal and an asylum request citing fear of persecution. Her attorney, Gregory Romanovsky, also requested parole, backed by letters from over two dozen Harvard affiliates, though ICE initially denied the request. Her immigration hearing is set for May 7.

Title VI Has Harvard On Notice

The Trump administration is leveraging Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to pressure universities like Harvard and Columbia over their responses to pro-Palestine protests, alleging a failure to protect Jewish students from a hostile environment. Columbia recently lost $400 million in federal contracts, prompting fears of similar action at Harvard, though it is not currently under formal investigation. Legal experts warn this aggressive use of Title VI—originally designed to combat racial discrimination—marks a sharp politicization of federal enforcement and has already led to policy changes across higher education institutions, even without legal adjudication.

Trump Cut Federal Funding to Penn for Transgender Athlete Policies. Could Harvard Be Next?

By Annabel M. Yu and Sheerea X. Yu

Following the Trump administration’s decision to cut $175 million in federal funding from the University of Pennsylvania over its policies allowing transgender athletes to compete, concerns are growing that Harvard may be next. Both institutions follow NCAA guidelines on transgender participation and were named in a lawsuit regarding a 2022 tournament hosted at Harvard. Experts say the legal basis for the funding cuts is unclear, and no direct policy violations have been cited. Still, amid broader funding threats and recent executive orders, the move is seen as a political tactic with potentially chilling effects across higher education.

Sheerea X. Yu

Protesters Rally in the Square Against Grad Student Arrests at Columbia, Tufts

Around 30 protesters gathered outside Harvard’s Smith Campus Center to denounce the arrests of Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil and Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk, both international students detained by federal immigration enforcement. Organized by Refuse Fascism, the rally condemned what it called a politically motivated crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism. Ozturk, arrested outside her Somerville home, was accused by DHS of supporting Hamas—without presented evidence—and swiftly transferred to a Louisiana ICE detention center, sparking widespread outrage and legal concern. Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell criticized the arrest as intimidation, not public safety.

HOOP Holds ‘Die-In’ Outside Widener To Protest War in Gaza

More than 60 masked protesters gathered on the steps of Widener Library Thursday for a "die-in" protest organized by Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine (HOOP) to condemn the rising death toll in Gaza. Protesters lay silently for 17 minutes while names of Palestinians killed in the conflict were read aloud, followed by chants and speeches demanding Harvard’s divestment and support for Palestine studies. The demonstration comes amid a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism, including the arrest of Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk and over 300 student visa revocations, raising alarm over ICE surveillance and academic freedom.

Op Eds: We’re Harvard Professors Suing the Trump Administration. Here’s Why.

In a powerful op-ed, Harvard professors Maya Jasanoff and Kirsten Weld explain why they and other academics are suing the Trump administration over what they call a campaign of “ideological deportation” targeting international students and scholars for pro-Palestinian political expression. Citing recent arrests and deportations, the authors warn that the administration’s actions threaten academic freedom, free speech, and due process, chilling open inquiry across campuses. Through their lawsuit, AAUP v. Rubio, the professors argue that both non-citizens and U.S. citizens are harmed when dissent is silenced, and urge universities to defend their foundational democratic role.

Editorials: Harvard Faculty Did the Right Thing. The University Should Too.

In this editorial, The Crimson urges Harvard University to join its faculty in actively resisting the Trump administration’s attacks on academic freedom and non-citizen students and scholars. Applauding the AAUP-Harvard chapter’s lawsuit against politically motivated arrests and deportations, the board calls on the University to go beyond caution and embrace collective legal action alongside peer institutions. It warns that silence or appeasement will not shield Harvard from inevitable targeting and that defending open expression and academic integrity is both a moral obligation and a test of institutional courage.

Op Eds: To Protect America’s Universities, We Need America’s Public

In this op-ed, Harvard computer science professor Boaz Barak argues that defending American universities from political attacks—particularly from the Trump administration—requires more than legal action; it needs public support. He outlines three key messages institutions must convey: that universities are economic engines, not partisan actors, and are capable of self-governance. While acknowledging public distrust, especially among conservatives, Barak calls for greater viewpoint diversity, responsible protest management, and clear communication of universities’ educational and research contributions. Ultimately, he believes higher education can survive political assaults by reaffirming its core mission to the broader American public.

Op Eds: The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its Harvard Plans

In a satirical op-ed, Yona T. Sperling-Milner humorously claims she was accidentally added to a Signal chat with members of the Trump administration, revealing their fictional plans to defund Harvard, seize campus griffin statues, and retaliate against student protestors. Using absurd characters and exaggerated messages, the piece mocks the administration’s aggressive stance toward universities and campus activism, particularly around pro-Palestinian protests. The op-ed critiques authoritarian overreach, censorship, and political posturing through sharp parody, highlighting the tension between academia and government power in the current climate.

Ivy League Admit Rates Increase For Class Of 2029 While Applications Generally Fall

Ivy League admission rates rose for the Class of 2029 as application numbers declined, reversing recent trends of surging applicants and record-low acceptance rates. Yale (4.59%), Columbia (4.29%), Brown (5.65%), and Dartmouth (6%) all reported higher admit rates and fewer applicants than last year. Cornell accepted 13.3% more students but didn’t share total applications. Harvard, Penn, and Princeton withheld key data. Analysts attribute the shift to post-pandemic changes, testing policy shifts, and rising focus on value and employability over prestige.
