Former Penn Swimmers Sue Harvard For Allowing Trans Athletes To Compete

Three former Penn swimmers have sued Harvard, Penn, the NCAA, and the Ivy League, alleging Title IX violations for allowing transgender swimmer Lia Thomas to compete in the 2022 Ivy League Championships. The lawsuit claims Thomas’s participation deprived cisgender women of opportunities and criticizes Harvard for not providing separate locker room facilities. The plaintiffs seek damages for emotional distress and lost athletic placements. The case emerges amid broader legal debates on transgender rights, including Trump’s recent executive orders reversing Biden-era Title IX protections for transgender students. Harvard declined to comment on the litigation.

“Hard Truths” about Harvard’s Classroom “Compact” - An Arts and Sciences committee raises anew questions about a Crimson education.

A Harvard committee examining classroom culture found declining student engagement, prioritization of academics, and increasing influence of social media. While students feel comfortable asking questions, they're less comfortable with controversial topics and diverse perspectives. Students often prioritize easy classes over intellectual interest and avoid difficult conversations. Faculty cite concerns about attendance, preparedness, and grade expectations. The committee proposed a "compact" emphasizing academic freedom and respectful discourse, plus training programs for students and instructors to improve classroom climate and open inquiry.

FAS Faculty Praise Proposed Non-Attribution Policy, But Ask Whether It Will Stand Up to Subpoenas

Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences largely supports a proposed non-attribution policy for classroom discussions but raised concerns about whether it could withstand legal subpoenas. Professors questioned if student comments on platforms like Canvas or recorded lectures could be compelled in legal investigations, particularly amid increased scrutiny from Washington. The policy, which follows the Chatham House Rule, aims to encourage open discourse by protecting identities. The proposal passed a Faculty Council vote and will face a final decision in March, with concerns about ethical boundaries in grading also being debated.

Harvard Nears Construction Milestones in Allston Amid Development Boom

Harvard is nearing major construction milestones in its Allston expansion, with new housing units, a theater, and research facilities taking shape. The American Repertory Theater’s new home, which includes 276 housing units, is set to open next year, while the Enterprise Research Campus will bring over 340 apartments this summer. Amid this development boom, Harvard has also supported affordable housing efforts, though residents are pushing for more contributions. Health and Human Services Dept. To Investigate Harvard Medical School Over Commencement Protests

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched a Title VI antidiscrimination investigation into Harvard Medical School over pro-Palestine messaging worn by students at its 2024 commencement. The probe, sparked by a New York Post article, will assess whether Harvard failed to protect Jewish students. The investigation follows a broader Trump administration crackdown on campus protests. Harvard Medical School stated it is reviewing the request and remains committed to combating discrimination. The inquiry is part of wider federal scrutiny into alleged antisemitism at U.S. universities.

Turns out pandemic wasn’t only cause for student setbacks - Education policy expert cites chronic absenteeism, easing of test accountability, other issues for poor marks in ‘Nation’s Report Card’

The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) revealed continued declines in student scores, particularly in reading, despite hopes for recovery from pandemic setbacks. Experts point to chronic absenteeism, which worsened during the pandemic, and a decade-long decline in reading skills as major factors. Additionally, the rise of social media and changes in test accountability since 2010 contribute to the poor performance. Disparities between higher- and lower-achieving students, especially along economic and racial lines, have grown, despite efforts like Massachusetts' Literacy Launch program to address these issues. Math scores saw slight improvements, possibly due to the school-based nature of math learning.

Editorials: Harvard’s Settlements Threaten Free Speech

A Crimson editorial criticizes Harvard’s decision to settle two antisemitism-related lawsuits and adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism, arguing that it threatens free speech. The board warns that the policy could create confusion over what constitutes legitimate criticism of Israel, leading to self-censorship. The editorial calls for Harvard to involve students and faculty in future policy updates, rather than reacting to external pressures like lawsuits. It expresses concern that Harvard’s commitment to free expression may be eroding under legal and political scrutiny.

Editorials Dissent: Why Is Protecting Jewish Students Up For Debate?

A Crimson dissenting editorial argues that Harvard’s adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism is a necessary step in protecting Jewish students, countering claims that it threatens free speech. The authors contend that Zionism, unlike typical political beliefs, is deeply tied to Jewish identity and that criticisms of Israel often cross into antisemitic rhetoric. They reject the notion that defining antisemitism should be subject to broad campus debate, asserting that Jewish students deserve the same protections as other marginalized groups.

Columns: An Open Letter to the Aspiring Burglars of Wigglesworth

A Crimson columnist humorously skewers Wigglesworth Hall, dubbing it Harvard’s “burglary capital” and lamenting its history of crime, architectural mishaps, and general misfortune. The piece chronicles burglaries, bizarre incidents, and near-tragic accidents, suggesting that even Bill Gates’ departure from Harvard may have been an escape from Wigg. The author jokingly pleads with would-be burglars to spare its long-suffering residents and calls for the dorm’s demolition, parodying Reagan’s famous Berlin Wall speech.

Flyby: Is Winter Break Actually A Break?

Daisy S. Gonzalez reflects on the paradox of Harvard’s winter break: a much-needed respite that never truly feels like one. Initially, the comfort of home and the absence of academic stress provide relief, but soon, emails about internships and post-grad plans disrupt the peace. Social interactions bring existential questions, and productivity guilt creeps in. The long stretch of unstructured time leads to a restless feeling, only for the semester to return in full force. Ultimately, she suggests that Harvard students may never fully know how to take a real break.

Who Needs Harvard?

Ben Wildavsky interviews Nicholas Lemann on the role of standardized testing in college admissions, tracing its history from a tool for elite selection to today’s debates over fairness and accessibility. Lemann critiques the SAT for fostering competition and conflict, arguing that admissions should focus on expanding mass educational opportunity rather than selecting a narrow elite. He advocates for curriculum-based testing over aptitude tests and emphasizes improving the broader higher education system rather than fixating on elite universities. Ultimately, he calls for national attention on non-elite colleges to promote upward mobility.
